I have heard from a buddy with a gen1 lightning that people on the NLOC and other places say around 600 is the breaking point.

i have a book that says a stock 351 bottom can safely go to 450-500 hp. after that, it says the stock rods and pistons are not likely to hold up for very long.

So on the 351 are the internals the weakness? versus the block being the weakness on 302's. I have a 351 sitting out in my shed that i was thinking about putting in my car, so i would also like to know, since i havent heard of anyone breaking a 351 block yet.

Subscribing, although if I build a 351, it'll have good internals. I'm just curious about the block strength.

ok, thanks guys, so basically no more than a 302....not much more anyway. Can anyone confirm block strength?....i was told 800-1000hp.....but is this correct?

i get the feeling that the block is stronger, but the internals have pretty much the same strength as a stock 302

The later 351's are weaker...

whoever said that a production 351 will hold 800-1000hp has one hellova good dealer hookup on his goods.

Check out hardcore50.com I think I saw a few posts about this...and that is were I am getting the 600hp number from.

depends on combo but a good ceiling is 600 rwhp. I have seen people go higher even with a late model (94-96 Block). The tune is critical to how much power these will take. The stock rods are good for 600. Detenation is the killer.

In my muscle mustang and fast ford mag, Feb. 06:
page 156-157 DSS prices:
Level 10 NonRoller cam block: $725
Level 10 ProBullet (quite stout internals) $2499 (357)
Page 20-21 CHP prices:
Street Fighter GT Shortblock 357: $2099
Pro Street Shortblock 393: $2699

Pretty big prices, and you don't really get much more for buying their better block.
For the internals for the Pro Street from CHP, a 393 kit is 1549, the Street Fighter GT is 899.
I personally plan on buying a 5.4 mod motor once i blow my 302 with the turbo.
I hear the actual block is plenty strong, so i'll just get the internals, girdle, etc. for about a grand instead.
Really, i'd like to go twin turbo v10 out of a F350 or something, but that's for my hot rod project i decided instead.

if you want a mod motor, my suggestion would be to sell your car and get a 96-04 as a starting point.

My car has been wrecked, a total loss, and brought back to life by my own two hands... it ain't goin ANYWHERE. Maybe i could do the mod motor on the hot rod then.... Model A/T Bucket/49 mercury... Ok, so i don't know what it's going to be...
Point being.... make a choice, internals, or whole new block.

if it is going in the 94, i would go with either a 302 based block or a 351 based block. the mod motor is not worht the hassle in my opinion. the hot rod project sounds like it is going to be badass though. cant wait to see what you decide on.

Whats the "rating" for a stock 302? With upgraded internals, i definately think a 351 would be stronger than a 302.

The hard part is that there is no exact level. Like some say 302's are good to 450hp...but some have one higher. I've heard 351's are good to 600.Not sure if many have gone higher. Im sure you would need really good internals at that point.

But it also depends on how u get there and how good of tune you have. How high you rev and so on and so on. The one good thing with going with a 351 is that u wont have to rev it as high as a 302 to make the same power. And that will help A TON with holding the block together.

How much power are you thinking about trying to make? Once u get there, will that be it? Or would u want more? Reason is, if u're gonna go even higher, then i would save the cash from switching to a 351 and just wait....then buy a Dart block thats either 302 or 351 based, and not have ANY worries about anything.

It depends....
