3g install progress and questions

yeah.....youre reading it right, i have enough room so i can either splice them back together or use spade connectors unitl i can get a new plug. would that work? was i not supposed to cut those?

I'm not sure I follow you. You either have different color wires than I did or you are doing more than you have to.

Here is another write-up that is pretty simple to follow.

I only had to splice into the stator wire - that was it. I dont recall cutting any other wires, so I'm confused. Can you elaborate upon what wires it was that you cut?

i can try. there are three wires coming out of the back of the plug that you plug into the 3g. the black/white one, that got plugged in to the other hole in the 3g. coming off that same plug are two more wires, one green and one yellow. those are the ones i cut.

Ah so. I know it's late and I'm half braindead, but me thinks you cut wires you didnt need to. On that plug (that plugs into the regulator on the 3G), you dont cut ANY wires - you just plug it into the new alternator.

If you solder those wires back together, the alt should work again.

For anyone else out there, if I missed something, please correct me. I dont think so though. Bed time.

ok, so ill get those wires back together, and with the stator wire i just cut it and plugged it in, i hope that was right.

you didn't miss anything, i think he cut the wrong wire

on the 3 g altenator there is a plug for one of the harnesses. plug that one in first. the other harness u clip the white wire with black stripe about 2 inches back from the harness--that is the wire that gets the little clip on it. and then the 4 gauge wire gets a ring terminal and mounts on the post of the 3 g and goes to the solonoid on the ds of the car. cover up/heat shrink the clip un-used since those wires are still hot. Thats all you have to do.

Alright so let me recap what i did and make sure i got this right. put the 3g in, clip white black wire, connect to single plug via spade connector, plug 3plug clip into back of alt. run 4ga wire from back of alt to starter relay. keep stock power cable attatched at relay. only thing i havent done is ground wire from block to chasis, what does this ground wire do? and i started and ran the car for a few min and smelled a light burning smell, checked the wires but everything was fine. any ideas? smells like its coming from over by the new alt/throtle body area.

Did you tape off the stock power wire (on the alt side)? The connector or wires need to be taped up really well so you are sure you won't have any live wires touching things.

The additional ground is to help the alternator. Since the alternator grounds to the engine block, it's necessary to have enough grounding capability for the much larger alt.

I don't know about a burning smell. Is the alternator new?

yeah its a new alt. and i taped the wire that youre talkin about off fairly well, there arent any bare pieces sticking out anywhere so i think ill be alright and i'll make that ground wire later tonight.

Maybe the smell is from the alternator warming up the first time... it might go away with a short drive down the road.

Just follow the negitive battery wire and attach a 4g wire from there to the frame rail or strut tower. I bolted mine to the bracket that holds the clutch cable in place. If your not sure what Im talking about I'll go snap a pic and post it.
