Im thinking of doing a headswap on my 98GT. Just wondering if anyone has tried puting the new 3V heads on, or if they even will go on??? How much more power do you think they will be putting out over the regular pi heads?

you coud do it but you would need a S#$%load of other parts. It's not just a simple headswap.

ECU probably be the main thing. Not sure how the sensors will be laid out on the new engines. Anything is possible but it may not be worth it if you have to replace more than just the heads. Might be worth it just swapping in a 3valve engine IF the computer will work.

Probably a major amount of work.

To even think of using them on a 96-98 you would have to disable the VCT and come up with a conventional throttle body because the 3V uses ETC.

Might be a good idea to ping FRPP and see if they have any thoughts about making 3V conversion kits.

As far as swapping a complete 3V, it definately will not work with the old ECU. The 3V uses Ford's new ECU as used on the Lincoln LS, T-Bird & 2004 F-150. It is major league different than the old ECU again has sensors and conrols for VCT & ETC.

it will work but like everyone else says it going to be alot of different parts to be swapped out. You have to change the heads/intake/cams/possible timing chain issues/ and a new computer. Im still going to be doing this sometime after christmas with my buddy so i can let you guys know how it goes. The HP increase is suppose to be like 35-45 OVER the PI heads. Then if you port/polish them your talking a major increase for the 96-98 GT's. Your probably talking just over 300hp to the crank with no other bolt ons and no porting involed! Thats pretty damn good if you ask me. Add all the other bolt on and porting we shouldnt have any problem getting over 400hp N/A soon enough.

FYI, this has already been done in a 99-03 GT. Can't remember if it was at the Korral or another Mustang forum but a guy swapped in the Ausi 3-valve motor into his GT. You might do a search at ModularFords or ask on one of the boards. THis was about 3 months ago when I read it.

from what i understand, the 5.4 trition is essentially the same motor as the 4.6. It has the same bore, but just a longer stroke to make up the extra displacement. Thats why its a very torque"y" motor. So with that said, they should fit but its just gonna require alot of new parts. But geesh 35-40 more horses over the pi heads is definitely worth some extra time and money. what does it cost now, generally, for a pi head swap??

IMHA the bigger problem is the entire front of the motor the variable timing extends an inch or so further forward so the valve covers,timing chain covers, A/C brackets and all of the front pulley system will have to be reworked

reworked? If you get the heads you can just get the new timing chain setup and bolt that on too. Main thing is your better off getting the long block and dispencing with the extras. There is plenty of room in front of the engine it'll just be a matter of using what you need from the 3-valve engine. The ECU may present the biggest problems but im not really sure how different the new setup is.

I was thinking of this mod too but by the time I get around to doing it, I'm sure there will be a lot of guys who have done the mod by the time I get around to it so I'm gonna ride it out and see what happens. Who knows, It may be a project to get done and have a cobrakiller turbo slapped on just for ****s and giggles.

I think that the 3V swap is not so easy as other posters mentioned. I would consider the 4V swap instead.

I got a used set of heads for $365 delivered, later found out that they needed four valves (AFTER I had installed the heads), for ~$58, $110 head change kit, $145 delivered for used 2002 intake, and about ~$75 for other parts and gaskets.

Me, about $760? Of course, I spent more money with new fuel injectors and a used X-pipe at about $500 more.
