4.10 gears too much for all season tires?

As the title says, I have a chance to get the new FRPP 4.10N gears (Improved stronger process and supposedly no whine) for $155, but I am unsure if I should as my mustang is a daily driver with all-season tires. I would like to go to the track every once in a while, but I was unsure if the 4.10's are a waste if I am staying with the types of tires I use?

Also, down the road I was thinking of going with a Vortech V-3 (when the money comes around) and I thought I read that combining the 4.10's with a centrifugal type s/c was a good idea because they don't produce very much power down low. is this a valid thought?

Thanks!

For a Centri Blower they would be great.

As far as the all seasons... There was a guy running 13.0's @ 105mph last week. Said he had 4.10's, stick, with some exhaust mods, and a Hurst Shifter with the OEM 17" All-Seasons.

I would go for it if it was me. I had the stock tires on my 08 5spd for a month and it had fairly good traction. On a roll in 1st gear it would hook up but on the 1st to 2nd gear shift, it would leave 10-15 foot stripes. I installed Toyo T1R's, now I can launch fairly hard from a stop and it only spins for about a foot between 1st and 2nd. The 4:10 gears make a big improvement in everyday driving. 4:10 gears and the centrifical supercharger is a good combo in my opinion, boost is progessive with RPM and tire spin is more controlled. You will have to have very good throttle control in 1st gear to prevent massive tire spin but it can be done. I have a SRT4 stage 3 that has massive traction issues if I drive it poorly. But, I would not think about lowering the boost or gears. I also have a 70 Z/28 with a 355, 4spd, 4:56 and a Procharger. On 17" T1R street radials it runs 11:80's @ 126 and 11:40's @ 124 on ET streets. I let my friend drive it that has very little racing experience and ran 13:11 @ 121 and almost hit the wall because he did not know how to control the tire spin. There are a lot of different opinion's on the 4:10 S/C combo, everyone's opinions are valid. After you hear them all, you will have to see which one fits your driving style best.

Prepare for a total newb question... but how do larger gears improve performance, exactly?

No problem, we were all new at one point. The gears are not physically bigger, 4.10 gears are numerically lower. This means that that if you have a 3.55 gear originally, the engine turns 3.55 revolutions to one revolution of the tires. the 4.10 gear means the engine now turns 4.10 turns to one of the tires. Hence the term 4.10 to one. The same holds true for the transmission. 1st gears has more of a torque multipication that 2nd gear and 2nd more than third. Thats why your car excellerates harder in 1st than it does in third. So, a 4.10 gear offers more of a torque mulitpication than a 3.55 or 3.31. However, the more torque mulitipication the more parasitic HP reduction. Lower gears do not add HP, they actually take more HP to turn but the torque advantages outway the minimal HP loss.

I have 4.10s on a 365x24x7 daily driver. Sun, rain, and snow on OEM 18in tires. Not a problem.

I also ran the OEM BFG 18" tires with my 4.10s and never had problems. The only issue was while I have the auto trans and the Bamachips 93 race tune...leaving from a dead stop and not spinning the tires some. When I'd be next to a cop at a light, I'd shift the car into 2nd and start off With the 29.2" rear tire, it takes more throttle pressure to spin them.
Here is when I was at the track with the OEM BFGs and 4.10s

You guys will probably think I'm crazy, but I use my stang as a daily driver, and with the stock 17" wheels and tires and 4.10's, I've acquired 38,000 miles so far. And, I've driven through 3 winters.

Sooooo... I would say no problem with 4.10's and the stock tires! I will probably be purchasing a new set soon, but it was funny. The guy at the tire place was lookin at prices and he was like, well the Pirelli's are $105 per tire, these Goodyear are $200 but you get a 40,000 mile guarantee. Hmmm, I think the Pirelli's will be a good fit again!

I am looking at getting new tires too, and I am leaning towards the Michelin High Performance All Seasons. Nothing but excellent reviews on TireRack, and apparently they go decently well in the snow.

I have 4:10's on a N/A engine and also drive it all winter with no issues. You can always start out in second gear if you find first gear too useless. Personally, if you plan on going to some sort of forced induction I would stay with the stock gears(assuming you have 3:55 gears)as I have heard some say that 4:10 are a little steep for something with a supercharged engine unless you are drag racing with lots of suspension mods, drag tires etc. I only say this because I myself spent a lot of cash on gears and installation and in hindsight, I probably would of been better off to put the cash spent on the gears toward a supercharger and after that was installed, see if I really need the gears. As it stands at the moment, when I get around to installing a S/C, I will probably spend even more cash to switch back to my stock 3:55's.
I don't mean to discourage you from any plans you might have, I just though I would share my experiences

I wouldn't let something as simple and relatively affordable as a gear swap stop me from going F/I in the future. If you want to liven up the car some now, do it! If it's going to be a few years before going F/I, it's not a bad option. If going F/I in several months, then I'd do lots of planning on what gear I'd want to run with it. I know several guys with F/I and 4.10s that drive them on the street regularly and they won't look back

I've heard people talk about tires breaking loose on a 1-2 shift, is this people that have the pirelli stock tires on their stangs instead of the bfg's?

My 08 has bfg's and I have:

4.10's
corsa sport exhaust
c&l cai
tillman 92 tune

even if I power shift from 1st to 2nd, my tires will chirp a bit but I've never once had them break loose on dry pavement.

My car has dyno'd multiple times on a Mustang Dyno at 298hp/302tq.

I have the stock, all-season BFG 18" tires on my car 9 months out of the year. I also have 4.10's, 4800 rpm stall converter, and a Vortech V2 S-trim blower. As centrifugal blowers don't add much power down low, the gears (and converter) work awesome to get revs up instantly to where my blower makes its best power.

I drive this car daily back and forth to work. If you're easy on the throttle there is no worry about tire spin. I've driven it plenty in the rain and snow, even though I have no traction control (hard wired off via the custom tune I have). It's a very liveable combination that drives totally easy, but is a rocket when I mash to loud pedal. If I floor it at lower speeds it'll spin all they way through 1st & 2nd on dry pavement, then spin a ways into 3rd and chirp into 4th (automatic trans).

I drag race it often during the summer months. During the summer months I run a different set of wheels/tires that includes BFG drag radials on the back (275/40/17's). These help hook up the car very well. Wish I could run drag radials year 'round, but I'm near Seattle where it rains too much. Still an easy car to drive daily, though.
