Took the plunge and got myself a Ford Racing 4.10 gear set. I have read various articles on different ways of setting the up the pinion height - the best of which i thought was the master housing dimension (as I don't have a depth gauge). My problem is the pinion is stamped with a height of 2.554" and the pinion head measures 1.868" thick (from top to bearing surface) = 4.422". This does not make sense as all the articles i've read quotes the master housing dimension as 4.415"!
The pinion head on the one I removed measures 1.880" thick and I had 0.028" shims.
Should I start by using the old shims and adding 0.012" shim to the new pinion set up so that the head thickness matches the old one?
Hope this makes sense.
Cheers
