4.10's ?

Motive sells all the gears at a reasonably price. They also sell 3.90 which seems like a good idea

I had my 4.10s installed Saturday. Wow - I'm impressed! The car really pulls nice through all the gears and off-the-line performance is awesome. Also they do away with that lugging feeling in 4th at lower RPMs and when you shift into 5th it doesn't feel like you've gone into overdrive overkill. Doing 75 MPH I'm just under 2600 RPM. The shop I went to uses Ford Racing gears only. I was expecting some whine but I was surprised that the 4.10s are about the same if not a little quieter than the stock 3:55s. This shop does a ton of gear changes so I'm sure the tech set it up right. I had them scheduled to install a Steeda tri-ax shifter too but it didn't arrive on time so I'll have that installed later. Anyway - IMO 4.10s are well worth the investment.

4:10 install in SOCAL

Where is a good place to get gears installed in SOCAL? I have 4:10's that were supposed to go on my 93 5.0, do those gears work on the 05?

You're kidding right? I think someone screwed up your gears. We put just 4.10's in, and the difference is night and day. Something is not right there. 4.30's should almost be neck snapping.

FRPP>Motive
Many more problems with motive than frpp. 1 person's experience = nothing... every product will occasionally have a problem, but FRPP gears have alot less problems than Motive gears do, that's for sure. They're both good, but I'd spring for the FRPP ones. That's all I'll buy for a Ford, as far as gears go.

oh, and to answer the original question, no noticeable change in mpg... that is after resetting it after having the gears for the 1st two weeks ('cuz you can't help but dig your foot into it to feel 'em at first). No regrets here. Only regret is they weren't ordered already so they could be installed on day one.

You will need a flash for you ecm, or you speedo will be off, along with your odometer. Just get the SCT XCal2 or Predator. Then you'll get some more ponies, and correct your speedo.

DarkFireGT, or anyone else that has installed 4.10 or 4.30 gears and has also flashed your ecm so that your speedometer is reading correctly, can you please tell me what you indicated RPM is at 75 mph and 85 mph? And also, what it used to be before you changed your gears? Any idea as to weather you have lost some top end speed, or if it will pull to an even faster top speed now in 5th with the lower gears? I would think gears would have to be the best bang for the buck performance wise.

They are the best bang for the buck. I'm sorry, I didn't pay attention to that info, but it will lower your top speed, as your gears will run out sooner. But You would have to do a lot more to your car to run out of gear in the 1/4

It will only lower your top speed if you can hit redline in top gear before the change.

The Mustang GT has a 0.68:1 5th gear overdrive. Road & Track shows the Mustang GT toping out at 143 mph in 5th gear at 4500 RPM (Drag Limited). Since Redline is 6000 RPM the 4.10 gears may actually allow the Mustang GT to overcome some of that drag and pull a little further up the RPM scale towards the 6000 RPM redline and possibly a higher top speed.

Any thoughts?

This is possible, but I know in the sn95's, 4.10's did lower the top speed. Got alot of mods to do before worrying about hitting top speed in the 1/4.

$50 and the guy spent more than that in parts. But he's a friend of the family and that's what he quoted me and he stuck to it. wouldn't even take another $50 for the parts. anything under $300 is ok. should be able to find $150 if you look.

Car And Driver's "Goat and Pony Showdown" January 2005, GTO vs. Mustang GT article listed the GTO as "Governor Limited" at 158 mph, and the Mustang as "Drag Limited" at 147 mph. Don't know if that is accurate or not but seams plausible given it's "Retro" design. Road & Track's "Road Test Annual 2005" July 2005, list the Mustangs top speed at 143 mph at 4500 rpm in 5th gear but doesn't indicate weather it is electronically limited or Drag limited. So who knows, but if drag is the limiting factor for the Mustang only pulling 4500 rpm in 5th gear, it stands to reason that it may pull a little better top end in 5th with 4.10 gears. Who knows, only one way to find out

I've read electronically limited @ 4500 RPM in 5th. I cant remember where however. They did mention 143 MPH.

My LT1 with 2.73's / A4 (.68 OD I think) topped out past 155. These things have to do at least that drag limited.

I'll have to do some diggin' to find out...........

I've had 4.10s in my car for about 2 years now, and i don't think i'd trade them in for any other gear unless i got some kind of forced induction.

Another question about rear gears the tech. told me that he might also have to replace the bearings anybody had to have this done with the gear change?

Okay, Im ready to get into my next large group of mods and I need some help with a 4.10:1 gear swap.

Currently, Im running through the traps in 4th gear above 5000 rpm and this is with 6200rpm shift points. If I do move over to a numerically higher gear is it "bad" to go into 5th (OD) during the 1320? I think I will be borderlining having to allow it to go into 5th if I do run the 4.10s.

But... I was also thinking that since there is no shift point for 4th-5th the only thing that will stop me from having to go into 5th is the Rev limit @ 6800. Is this true?

Basically, I want to get the most out of what I've got and gears is the next thing to toss in. I'm just not familiar with these above issues and Im wondering if I should step down and stick with ordering 3.90s instead.
