Just out of curiosity, what's the most boost you've ever seen on a stock 4.6 bottom end? I want to know just how much power I can squeeze out of the factory internals!!!!!!!

well it depends on what bottom end we are talking about the old 4v, 2v, or a 03 cobra bottom end

careful, boost is not always what will take them out... I blew my piston #7 with a good tune and only 8psi... it can be just the power is too much... only so much tq/lbs...

I was referring to the 2v.

well from what i've seen on here & in person, 350-400 rwhp tends to be the limit. now there area ton of different circumstances that could affect that as well. such as a really good tuner, how easy you are on the car, etc...... But more than anything, detonation will kill the engine in a heartbeat. that's the kicker. hope it helps

Its a hit or miss ballgame. There are guys running over 400 rwhp on the stock bottom end. How long will it last? A week, a month, a year? Boost is not the real killer, detonation is. However, even with a good tune, the stock internals will eventually crap out. Just up to you on taking your chances. I will say that more guys running the Steeda tune or the T&J Performance tune are making more and "safer" power.
Hell, I spun 2 rod bearings on 250 rwhp, so you don't need boost to waste an engine.

Yeah, I just started the fund for my built bottom end immediately after I finished installing the Novi 2000. I'm pretty much planning on it crapping out on me this next spring, but at least I'll have the money to go visit Tim in Atlanta. hehe

BTW, I saw almost 12 pounds of boost on the dyno, and not one sign of detonation.

Just keep some money set aside in case it decides to croak.

You could be on the edge with 12 lbs but who knows for sure. I believe Tim(Cobra Killer) had his car around 450hp for nearly a year on the stock bottom end before he went crazy(and turned it into a drag racer).

I'm seeing close to 10 in this cold weather but I'm typically at 9 in the summer.

Heck, you may keep it at 12 for a year and still not need a new engine. I've bounced it off the rev limiter several times by accident and it still runs fine(wouldn't recommend doing that everyday). I don't know anyone that's blown up an engine due to the tune, yet....

I am over 400rwhp with a tune by T&J, and I really don't get the feeling I'm living on borrowed time. Once my 42lb'ers and Pro-M MAF go in, and the restrictor comes out, I should see 11psi and ~430rwhp. If my motor goes tango uniform in the next 6 months I'm kinda screwed, but I really don't think it will happen. (fingers crossed)

I think you'll get 430, easy. I was talking to Tim about the torque numbers on all the novi 2000's and he told me that it's due to the size of the charger. It really wants air. I bet your torque will jump up close to 40 ft-lbs when you step up the boost to 11lbs. Heck, your not even 1/2 way to the novi 2000's max at 11lbs!!!!

My car had nitrous on it at 900 miles, a procharger at 1500 miles, and an s trim at 7500 miles. Power was 341 rwhp, 377 rwhp, and finally 437 rwhp with no issues at all.
There are more and more cars making well over 400 rwhp these days with the engines living but as stated above you never know when it'll go kaboom. Obviously a good tune is a must have but there comes a point when you can simply overpower the pencil rods in our cars.

my bone stock 98gt had a motor installed under warranty at 60k. The number 8 cylinder went and thru a rod. It blew a hole in the block. Two weeks after I got it back it started leaking coolant. Ford installed a new intake manifold. Needless to say, you never know how long its going to last.
