Right, there exists no MY 64 mustangs. BUT you should start with a 0 not 1 in your table and then you find that 2005 is the 40th anniversary model. However, like somone said before, Ford needed a way to sell 04's and knew that 05's will sell on ther own merits without stupid anniversary badges!

You're problably correct about selling the '04s but if you think in terms that the Mustang was introduced in 1964 (even though officially there aren't any '64s), 2004 would be the 40th anniversary of the introduction. If you think in terms actual MY designations, 2005 is the 40th anniversary. I believe Ford was celebrating the introduction not the not the first official MY listed in the VIN.

1990 wasn't the 25th year. 1989 was.

Ford started putting the "25 years" badge on the Mustang in April of the 1989 Model year. They let the badge stay until April of the 1990 model year.

SO the 25th anniversary was really 1989, 35th was 1999, 40th is 2004.

Simple math here....

April 17th 1964 - April 17th 2004....that's 40 years. The 40th birthday fell during the 2004 Model year, not the 2005

1965 was the 1st model year Mustang

1974 was the 10th model year Mustang

2004 was the 40th model year Mustang.

There is NO such thing as a 0th model year.

You guys can say what you want. Forget Ford in the world of car collecting the first Mustang per the VIN was a 1965. You will never find a vin for 64. It does not matter if they released them in April. My 2005 Chrysler 300C was delivered to me in April 2005 and still is a 2005. When I trade the 300C in, in May of 2005 it is concidered a current model year even though I will of had it 13 months. The VIN says 65 its a 65. 1965+40=2005. Plain and simple, when the car is introduced does not matter. It was honored in 2004 as stated as a marketing ploy and they got away with it. To move the old model Mustang.

SO Ford must have been thinking ahead in 1989 and 1999 when those were the 25th and 35th anniversary years??? They wanted to make sure the '04 was the 40th to sell 2005's??

Like i said before April 17th 1964 to April 17th 2004 is 40 years. The birthday fell during the 2004 model year.

I guess the point I was trying to make went over your head so let me try again. The first Mustang was introduced in 1964. I assume we can all agree on that? OK, the 40th anniversary would be 2004. Even though the 2005 models were introduced in 2004, many people would not be able to understand why the 2005 is designated the 40th anniversay model since it appears to be the 41st anniversary model. Therefore the 2004 model was chosen as the celebratory model since the MY coincided with the anniversary.

And it helped to sell the 2004 models.

This is all just speculation on my part to try to explain it. Please don't it as fact...hell, don't even take it seriously!

1966 was the 2nd MY and "1 year anniversary model" (if ther would have been one)

1975 was the 10 years anniversary model

2005 is the 40 years anniversary model

This is true regarding model years.
It would also be true that all cars produced between April 17th 2004 and April 17th 2005 would be 40 years anniversary cars, thus including both MY 2004 and 2005 cars.

Ideally, an S197 built in April 2004, but with a 2005 VIN, would have been the perfect way to have done it. Even if the April 2004 run had limited quantities.

However, Ford just didn't and nothing can change that.

The Mustang should be ready for a full make over by 2014. I wonder if Ford and "Team Mustang" will get their timing right for that?

Glad I have what I have, it's all about performance and general appearance, not badges. If anyone with a 2005 model really, really wants a 40th anniversary badge on their Mustang just quit whining and buy a set.

The first Mustang was called and sold as a 1965. That is an absolute fact though it came out in 1964. Ford did sell 25th anniversay models in 1990. That's a fact. The 40th anniversary model should be 2005. That's also a fact. Americans have poor math skills. That's a fact. The anniversary dates are argued every five years. And by the way, 2001 was the first year of the millenium, not 2000. 2000 was the last year of the last millenium. (If I owed you $2,000 would you be happy with $1,999. It takes the 2,000 to complete the first two milleniums.) We could argue this forever. 2005 is the 40th anniversary. Period.
