427 Mustangs?

I just read a Mustang And Fords article; www.mustangandfords.com/techarticles/15999 and it states that some 427's were put in 69 Mustangs. Is that correct? If so, how many? Everything I had read said that the 67 Shelby was the only Mustang to come from the factory with a 427. I know the Ford engine codes have a W code 427 listed for Mustangs but thought that none had been installed. I know that some were installed in 68 Cougars. I have seen two of these. Anybody with documented proof information would be appreciated. Thanks.

One thing to remember about that magazine: Never, ever, believe what's printed in there is the truth. They print more disinformation than the Ford reference books. Were there ever 427's installed in Stangs by Ford? More than likely a few were. Dealer installations? Yea, there were more than a few. Installs by their owners? Lots, myself included. ANYONE who says Ford NEVER installed a 427 in a Stang is a FOOL. ( there's at least one of these that posts regularly on the Ford FE bigblock forum on Network54 and thinks he's some kind of Guru cause he owns a few 427's, LOL ) When it comes to what Ford did and didn't do when it comes to stuff like this, "Never say Never"

Not soaked, I'm lucky to be on the far western fringe of the storm. We just have a light breeze and a bit of rain ( but not as much rain as my yard needs ) Gonna have to keep the sprinklers on the yard still. But I did go thru Lilly three years back and Andrew 14 years ago, and they were no picnic.

Here is a little trivia I just stumbled accross:

1968: The 302-cid V-8 replaces the "289" midyear, and a medium-riser version of Ford's premier race engine, the 427-cid V-8 (rated at 390 hp), is offered as a $622 option. On April 1st, the 428 Cobra Jet engine is introduced as part of an option package aimed at enthusiasts.

I can't say I've seen one. Part of me wants to say that they either didn't AS A RULE, or it wasn't a "public option", and another part of me wants to say "yeah, they did."

If they DID, they're rare.

HOWEVER, the 427 WAS on option in '65. LOL! Do some research . Some factory coupes DID get them.

I'm not saying or implying that Ford never put a 427 in a Mustang running down the assembly line. I don't know but would like to know. Yes, anything is possible but does anybody know of a documented Mustang with a 427? I really hope that there are some. I know I would love to see one. When I said that everything that I had read said that Mustangs (with the exception of a few Shelbys) never had a 427 were magazine articles. In this case I really hope that the writer is correct.

I have seen mistakes in that magazine before too. I think it was by the same writer that said a 289 hi-po block was in a c-code Mustang. He gave the casting numbers and they were like all other casting numbers to me. In a later issue he backed up and said he had made a mistake.

While I also never say never, I don't think Ford put a 427 in anything officially in 1969. I think they were out of em, and 428s were everywhere. Could a backstock 427 have been installed in place of a 428? Maybe... They sure didn't have an engine code for it.

As far as 427s going into 65 coupes, I assume you mean Mustangs, and I am wondering how they did that, as the engine doesn't fit the bay.

They made about 10 with the 427 sans most every other part of the car. It was strictly for drag racing but HAD to officially be a factory option to make them legal. I THINK (think mind you! ) they went to the Gas Rhonda team. Could be wrong . . .

Don't confuse Fairlane Thunderbolts with mustangs, while there were some 'altered' mustangs dragging they were not factory optioned according to all the crap I just read on the "internet" so you can take that for its worth

Perhaps someone is a better googler than I though

In 1968 you could get the 427 in a GTE Cougar, and later that year they came out with the 428's I'd post a picture but the file needs to 78 kb and its too small! :damnit:

From everything I've ever read, I have to agree with Dodgestang. I've never seen anything about a 427 in a '65 Stang other than the factory "altered" drag specific cars that went out to some of the big-time race teams back then.

Insofar as a 427 in a '69 Stang from the factory, I've always understood that the only 427 cars were Shelby's and that there are only a handful of these cars that anyone knows the whereabouts of today. Anything is possible when it comes to these cars, however.
