I have a 88 Mustang 5.0. It is a It isnt MAF. I was wondering if I would be able to put a real mild cam in the car. Would it still run ok? Because I know when you put a big cam in a Speed Dencity car the computers **** out. If I am able to can you tell me what kind of cam or the specs on it.

Thanks,
Dave

What other mods do you have Dave? If the car is stock, you'll get much more bang for the buck with other mods before you mess with the cam. There are MANY people out there running 12's with the stock cam.

I'd look at exhaust, intake manifold and possibly different heads before I messed with the camshaft - especially in an SD car.

The car is for the most part stock. I just have exhaust on it. But I was just wondering if it is possible.

get some gears and short throw, good exhaust, intake.... but I would think putting in a cam that wouldn't effect the SD wouldn't be worth it anyways. Try putting on some 1.7 roller rockers and see what happens, that will give you more lift.

you can put anything on a SD car, cam, heads, supercharger etc. if you get the thing tuned and a chip burned.

As Mr Yount stated..throwing in a cam with all other components stock is just not the route to go. The stock cam is really quite a good runner...your true bottle neck items are the heads/intake. A "small cam" will net you next to zero gain without other components..maybe 10HP..trust me that's alot of work for 10HP when there are so many alternative mods available to you. My car DID not enjoy being moded and turned into quite a cranky little bastard in regards to idle quality when I began modifying my little one. I had to convert to mass air so I could use the components I wanted to use. Anyhow...VERY few places are left that can dyno tune an SD car..and the minute you change anything..the chip would be inaccurate. AS stated above get the gears, shifter, subframe connectors..then maybe a head/intake swap..then think about the cam shaft.

My car is auto so I wouldnt need a short throw. But any ways I am building a new motor. I was thinking about honing it, and then keeping the stock crank. Then forged pistons and rods. That is why I figured on putting a new cam in it considering I had the motor out at the time. But Thanks guys. If any one else has anything to add feel free.

Thanks,
Dave

Junk yard. Checkout the tech here at Stangnet for the good writeup about going to MAF. I'll be going that route myself soon.
