they are offering a GM type HEI distributor for 5.0 fords now and I was thinking of getting one for when i put the carbed 5.0 in my 86 GT. anyone here used one and what do you think of their quality and performance? And what brand did you get? I see three offered for sale from different brands, but I imagine they are all made by the same manufacturer anyway, just marketed under different names. Thanks!

I bought one for my Stang when I had a mild 351W in it. I ordered a D.U.I setup that they custom built specifically for my engine combo (Custom Curve, Advance etc.) It made great power, and was extremely easy to wire up. Infact the D.U.I. seemed to perform better then the previous MSD setup I had on the car before. But it's freekin huge! I coudn't run a very big air cleaner since a drop base Air Filter woudn't clear the distributor. And I had to jimmy rig a setup so I could put my Water Temp Sending Unit in the Intake. Of course it also depend's what kind of intake and hood clearence you have. If you got a fairly tall intake and a nice cowl hood, clearence problem's wont be as bad as mine. Overall it's a a really nice piece if you don't mind putting up with the huge size of the thing and I woudn't be afraid to recomend one when it comes to performance. If you end up going with an H.E.I. setup go with D.U.I. ONLY. Stay away from brand's like Proform etc.
What Intake are you running?
Stock Hood?????
Carb Spacer????
Let Me Know.........

They are cheap knock off's for one thing, and basically a stock GM HEI Distributor made to fit a Ford. When you order a D.U.I. Setup they get all the important detail's of your engine and car such as Cam spec's, Compression, Weight, Trans. and more. With your spec's they build you a distributor with a custom advance, curve, etc. that would work best with your combo. None of there distributor's are pulled off the shelf and shipped to you, they are built as you order. The D.U.I. comes complete with a High output Coil, Module, Cap, Rotor etc. and basically you have just two wires to hook up, throw your plug wires on and your ready to go.
Like I said it's a great setup, but if you don't want the hassle of a big bulky distributor, I would go with a complete Crane Ignition Setup instead, which is what I did when I built my 408.
