word on the streets is that the teflon wears off the pistons or the cylinder walls after a while. a local blew his block apart on his 03 cobra, but i think he detonated...

i believe that you can run a very small amount of boost(6psi) and even crack the block if you have detination. i was so close to doing a DIY turbo system. also i think the 3.8 blocks are a lot stronger than the v8 ones.

I recall reading a post on this site a while back that mentioned how Ford had removed a lot of metal from the 5.0L roller blocks,compared to the 289-302 blocks of the 60`s and 70`s.
He said if you put one beside the other you would be amazed at the difference...referring to the fact that the 5.0L roller blocks are much thinner in critical areas.

that is true, i have a 69 302 block that is heavy as hell, a noticable amount heavier than the other blocks i have. anybody want it.

someone said something about a mexican block. Someone i know got a block and was told it was a mexican. Is there anyway to tell if it is or not?

If its a true mexican block there should be a casting that says "Hecho en Mexico" (Made in Mexico) somewhere on the block... I forget where exactly. Maybe near the lifter valley?

The 03 Cobra's that are melting stuff, are usually running around with a pegged maf or have an injector fail. There is a local on a ported eaton with nitrous that has been sprayed ALOT, the nitrous hung open at the track, sprayed all the way down the return road, into the pits and with it idling for awhile. Couldnt figure out what the hissing was, the nitrous had hung open partly and was constantly spraying. Sumbitch still hasnt blown up.

The guys making back to back high speed runs on the highway without doing cooling mods and running with pegged mafs on a eaton blower are usually the ones that grenade stuff. Some dude just put down 812 rwhp on his 03 Cobra, stock engine, might have been pump gas too.

So close to the lifter valley that its IN the lifter valley . Apparently they have these wierd bosses on the front too:

Also, they are NOT 4-bolt main blocks. On the whole, they are about on-par with a Sportsman(or slightly better), but cheaper and much harder to find.

"Sportsman" blocks are just based on early 302 castings. They are not rated at 600hp by FRPP anymore, but 450hp. Some have split even at 450 N/A.

Mexican blocks are Fords diamond in the ruff. They will hold 800hp.

if i want to run about 16-20 psi off of a vortech whats a good one to buy? i know the s-trim is 10 psi so thats too small

The S-trim will put you at over 600 rwhp without blinking. Next up after that is the YS-trim, which will move you towards 900rwhp.

Dont worry about boost, worry about air flow. The S Trim can make plenty more than 12 psi and can get you into the 600's. The next step is a T Trim, then the YS or YSi Trim.

Here's my experience with a nutty street racing guy down the street. A stock 5L block will hand 150 all day un girdled. You can push 200 and still run pretty reliable. 250. Still holding together. 300 shot, bammo block breaks. So he throws another block in. ran 250 shots for a full summer, no problem. 300 shot at the end of the year and on the second pass, bammo.

I concurr - the only production 4-bolt main 302 was the boss 302 which had a lot more than just the 4 bolt main design.

The 4.6 lasts so well becuase it has a lot of race technology in it. If anyone has ever worked or seen one torn down - you know why. The skirt is very deep and the main caps are actually imbedded into the block as opposed to kind of jutting out from the bottom. Also the webbing is rather thick to boot. The only real weakness of the engine are the tensioner guides for the timing chains that really start wearing out at around 100k - many owners just don't realize it and timing can really fluctuate and jump if ignored.

Supra's bottom end are good up to 1100 HP. I wish ford blocks were like that in the fox's
