One of Ford's other popular strong engines was build the same way, albeit about 45 years ago. The 4-bolt 406, 427, and 428FEs had a skirted "Y-block" design and the main caps were cross-bolted through the skirts. They had small main bearings for an engine that size and boy would they rev. The dual-quad SOHC 427 made 657hp @ 7800....factory .

Anyway, from what I've seen on the 4.6s, they have four bolt mains with two more cross bolts through the block skirt for a total of 6. Is that right?
