how hard is it to change from a 5 speed to an AOD? I have an AOD out of 88 pickup.

you are gonna also need all the cables and everything from an auto car. and im not real sure about going from an 5 speed car to an auto but i would also like to know how the cable works to move it from park. you know the one where th ebrake pedal has to be dpressed to ge it to switch. not sure on that but you night want to look into it.

your best bet would be to find someone with an auto car who will swap you.

edit: where are you from in south ga?

Why in Gods name would you want to do that? To make the car less fun and slower??

You'd have to get a new driveshaft, transmission, bellhousing, converter, pedal assembly, and a few other pieces.. I think the crossmember is interchangeable, but check that out also.. But unless your handicapped, a young weak girl, can't drive, like going slow, or lazy.. Manual FTW!!!!

Also i believe you will have to change to an A9P ECU, because the A9L ECU doesn't work right with the AOD for some reason IIRC...

That was only for certain years...i beleive 1991-1993 wouldn't let you shift unless your foot was on the brake.

In my '88, you could shift to drive without putting your foot on the brake at all. I kinda liked it.

I just took the AOD stuff out of my car since i'm going t-5 swap.

You need

Shifter + shifter cable
AOD brake pedal assembly (or just remove the clutch pedal or let it hang)
Jumper harness for the clutch interlok switch
TV cable
AOD
Crossmember
flexplate
inspection plate
AOD exhaust hanger
AOD computer

I'm in Folkston, Ga.

And to answer all the why change to an AOD questions, I plan on bracket racing this car some and an automatic works way better in bracket racing. I don't street race and I'm not a test-n-tune freak.

You can keep your same driveshaft and crossmember. The two are the same exact thing doesnt matter if the car is an auto or stick.

Auto D/S has a vibration dampener on the yoke. Lenght is the same

X+member will work but you'll either need to slot the tabs the trans mount bolts into or grind the welds on the side sleeves and reposition the x-member

An 89 would be a better start than 88 trans but it will still work, just check out the upgrades for an AOD so it will last.
Mine has been in the car for two yrs of racing and about to start 3rd yr.
If you a have a pick a part wrecking yard near you pick up a late model (98+) 4r70w trans and use the drums from it and the gearset and you will have no problems with those parts in your AOD.

Yeah in my '87 you don't have to step on the brake to move the AOD shifter either. I think that started on later models.
