So I was changing my oil, and I looked at my stock mid-pipe dreaming of changing it, and I saw what looks like 6 CATS! Is that what they are? 6? Is this a '98 only set-up?

I think only some (california cars) had 6. Two pre-cats and four cats.

do the aftermarket x pipes with only 2 cats do as good a job as the stockers? Will they filter the same for emissions?

My 02 has 4 cats, 2 pre and 2 actual.

Good question though in terms of can an aftermarket catted X or H pass emissions testing in CA (the toughest nationally) if a visual isn't performed. In other words does clean up the exhaust as much....my guess is no

I'm in VA but if it passes in CA it'll pass here. I wouldn't think 2 cats could do the job or 4 or 6 so I was wondering why the companies even put them on. I have a hard time believing 2 cats will clean the exhaust enough for emissions testing .

So now the question is : If an aftermarket catted X pipe can't pass emissions, then why the hell get one compared to an offroad one? To dmapen the sound a little and to get cops off your ass in case they look under your car?

yeah me too...most cops don't know how many cats the car is supposed to have in the first place. So I'll get myself a OEM H pipe from a junkyard or something and keep it for when I need to pass smog, which for me is like in 3 years.
