An 01 shouldn't take more than 5. Someone else chime in if I'm wrong.

just put 5 in your 01, if that doesn't read high enough on the dipstick, put in some more, you will know from then on how much it takes.

I think 99,00 and some 01 use 5qts and the rest use 6qts. Don't know if its the dipstick or what but some do use 5 and others 6. If both engines are the same then one engine is running 1qt low or the other is running 1qt over. So my guess they are diffrent somehow.

I work at jiffy lube. An 00 or 01 GT came in (cant remember what year) and it only took 5 quarts. I talked to her a little bit. Too bad it was an auto She was pretty hot I told her that mine takes 6 quarts and that she should check out stangnet. Was gonna try and sell her my intake lol

I have a 01 cobra and I did a experiment. I filled the car up with 6qts (it showed 3/4 of the way between the low and full line)... and started the engine let it run to operating temperature. After it was running, the dipstick was bone dry not even anything on the tip. So I also believe on the 4V engines they suck the oil up for the massive heads... So I am going to start using 6.5 qts from now on...

Granted the engine will of course consume the oil but I am wondering how much is left in the pan at operating temperatures? Especially if you are driving hard through corners???

My takes exactly 5 qts to show full. I have one of the first romeo blocks, so it might have the old dip stick. My pulley's are older type (96-01) too.

I use Valvoline 5w20 and change it every 3K miles.

To end/answer this question we need someone with each of the following cars to look at their owners manual and reply with what it says.

1996 GT
1997 GT
1998 GT I'll take this one - Owners Manual says 6 qts for 4.6 V8
1999 GT
2000 GT
2001 GT
2002 GT
2003 GT
2004 GT

That should put this question to rest. And if you have a 4V car, chime in with your year and what your manual says too if you like.

99 GT: owners manual says 5, I changed it today and by golly their right. 5 quarts puts it at the top of the MAX on the old dipper.

Speedy Lube kept telling me 6 and charging me for an extra Q@ $6 per.
So I said thank you I'll do it myself.
