I am seriously considering a tranny swap, from my stock fmx to a tremec 5 speed or 6, within the next few months. I can find a donor car for parts but I wanna go for 6 speed. Is there a big difference between the 5 and 6 speed swap? Do you go about and do them both the same way?

You realize that there will likely be alot of fabrication involved with a tremec?

A 6 speed will cost almost double that of a 5 speed.

Are you buying the tranny new or have you found a used one?

Just keep in mind there are a few different Ford versions that may affect which other parts you will need (flywheels, clutch, bellhousing, crossmember, etc). The differences will be in the input shaft diameter, input shaft splines, and input shaft length. You can get more info here

That looks to be the 1 1/8" - 26 spline (not 21 spline) trans that they have modified to use with a big block motor (cut down the input shaft diameter). I don't know if you have a big block or not. The second thing to consider is that you don't have alot of choices for clutches for the 1 1/8"-26 spline input shaft as compared with the 1 1/16"-10 spline models. Also, this model has the shorter input shaft, so you would need a bellhousing/ scattershield for a top loader and not a Richmond

so would it be possible to have it on a small block (347 still with machinist)? Im not really sure as to which clutches i will be needing though. Will it be a big deal not having a wide variety of clutches to use? sorry im not the smartest in that area

The cutting down of the pilot of the input shaft may be a problem. The pilot may not extend into the bearing/bushing. The small number of clutches just means you get to spend more as the ones available are usually the higher end units.
