65 Mustang w/ 70 front disc: Questions

The previous owner had fitted a 1970 front disc setup on my 1965 Mustang.

I just rebuilt the front suspension and that's when I realized the front outer tie rod ends are a different size. I ordered the '65 tie rods and it looks like the '70 rods are bigger (thicker?). Looking up part numbers I see that I'm going to need to get the '70 tie rods.

I also looked at the upper ball joints and they seem to be the same part for 64-74, so at least I got that right.

Now, I can't find anyone who sells or lists the lower ball joint seperate from the lower control arm. I purchased the lower control arm with the ball joint installed. So my question is; Are the lower ball joints also the same from a '65 to a '70?

Thanks for any help,

Not sure about the 65, but I just matched the 67 to the 70 and they match the spindle no problem.

You can't go by the part numbers because any change will change the part # regardless of how small the change is. If he put 70 spindles on it then the 65 lower control arms will probubly match. Unfortuneatly you wont know until you get them. Unless someone else here has already done it.

The front strut rod was different from the 67 to the 70 so I used the 70 rod with the 70 lower control arms. From what I can remember the 65 has a shorter arm, but the only thing that matters is the diameter of the lower ball joint shaft.

the upper ball joints are a crap shoot to, I know in 67 there are 2 different joints, they both match the spindle, but one mounts with 3 bolts and one with 4. So if your replaing the control are it doesnt matter, but if your just replacing the ball joint it might. And I have not matched the 65 with the 67 so I don't know if the arms are the same or not.

yes, same ball joint for all years, 65-73, and for granadas too.

the outter tie rods are larger for 70, true. 70 and up only.

67-69 are the same outter tie-rods.

as for your question, i'm sorry, i just replace the lower arm, every time.

The 67 outer tie rod on the 6 cyl is different than the 70 outer V8, not sure about the 67 V-8

You just need the outer tie rod ends. I did the same conversion. Just buy a new set of lower control arms. If you didn't already they're the same.

Are the lower control arms the same length on the 65 and 67? I thought I remembered them as being shorter on the 65.

Also somewhere between 67 and 70 they went from a 4 bolt pattern on the strut rod mount to a 2 bolt pattern, so you have to have the lower arm that matches your strut rod.

Streetgrand, you have a picture of a 70 vert in yellow on your website with mach1 paint on the hood, do you have a picture of the rear of that car with the spoiler?

Thanx, it looks good on a 69 coupe, but I don't think I like it on the ragtop. My son bought one for his and I set it on the back of my ragtop and I didn't like it, I thought maybe it would be better with the mach1 panel.

I think I may just go with the honeycomb panel on mine and skip the spoiler.
