67-68 Tachometer?

Where can I find a stock-type 67-68 tach? I'm sure I could find an original on E-Bay, but I'm wondering if a good quality stock-type replica can be had.

What i planned on doing was buying like an autometer 5" and having a cover printed with the same font, colors and style of the original, then laying it over the autometer. I would look kinda stock, but more accurate

I also went the mini Autometer tach in the clock opening. The black face looks very close to stock. I've had several people at car shows ask if it was a stock option. Also, where it sits in the dash is very easy to read.

I tried to find an original 68 tach at swap meets and the price was around $500 to $750 for one that was in good, workable shape. For that much money I bought a JME gage cluster that works well. Another Option...

Great ideas, all. I like the one about making an original-type overlay for the autometer. The small tach in the clock position sounds, well, too small.

I have only seen one of the factory tach/speedo setups once at a swap meet, and yeah they wanted about 500 for it. Wasn't even in good shape either.

Getting tired of the plain-jane so soon? I've been holding onto the original deluxe dash with tach for many years now, did not know they were worth THAT much, hmmmm. Are those prices for the GT tach (6K) or the Shelby tach (8K)?

Don't forget your underdash wiring and engine compartment wiring also need to be changed (not just the dash).

LMAO. I knew you would say something like that, Edbert. Those prices are probably for the 6K tach; I doubt there are many Shelby tachs being parted out...

Getting a tach, either stock or aftermarket, was in the plans long before I bought the car. I was willing to compromise and buy a car without one because I knew I could either find an original tach or put in an aftermarket unit.

Actually, I'm not getting tired of the plain-jane look at all. In fact, I like it more and more every day. Personally, I like the camera-black dash much better than the brushed aluminum. The aluminum isn't bad, but my tastes lean toward the more subtle plain black. Not that I'm defending myself or anything ( )

I like the idea above about making an orginal-type overlay for a modern Autometer.

I got my 6k tach off of ebay for $250, plus another $75 to have it repaired and calibrated. I had to pass a few up that went for more bucks that I wanted to drop on them. I struggled with going with oem or the JME white-face Autometer cluster.

the link is to jme interprises they have all years of clusters. The 67-68 dash has severial options but the price is a little rich.

Repaired & recalibrated: dropped off at a local shop that restores instruments. I'm not sure of everything that was done to it, but it didn't need much (accorrding to the shop).

Man, those JME gauges look shweeet. (but oh the pain $$$$) I like the special order black-faced gauges. I think I'll definitely have to consider that, rather than paying through the arse for an overpriced, non-working tach from EBay.

Yeah, that cluster looks really good. I'm still thinking about it. I pieced together a nice factory cluster with the trip speedo, a clock, and the tach. I have the original wiring harness for a tach car, and a modified one made from a non-tach car (the tach one requires different underdash and engine wiring -- $$$). I could probably get close to the cost of that JME cluster by selling my Frankenstein on ebay.
I really want a tach, but I also really want an oil pressure guage and an ammeter. Don't want to hack the console or anywhere else, so I'm still looking for options that aren't tacky.
I'm playing with the idea of putting a '68 oil pressure guage in the clock hole, it's the same size and such and would look oem unless someone knew better.

Do you have the floor console in your car? Maybe you could fabricate a gauge mounting plate to replace the the door on the storage compartment in front of the shifter.

JME units are very nice. But you can make your own. I made mine for about $500.00 and that was the cost of the Autometer gauges and wiring, I splurged on the speedo and spent twice as much as necessary, so you can probably do this for ~$350-$375 if you try to keep costs low.
