69 fstbck exhaust

I have a 69 fastback I am restoring, what exhaust should I use to get the deep, throaty sound of the newer cobra's etc. I don't want it to be an all together loud exhaust, just have that powerful sound when you get on the gas. I don't know what kind of exhaust/mufflers Ford uses on the newer more powerful Mustangs. Any suggestions?

I have flowmaster 40's wicked sounding @ WOT but probly more than what you are wanting. You'll probly want a non-chambered muffler like magnaflow or dynomax.

in your opinion what is the difference between the flows and the magnaflow?

I personally don't like the sound of flows and I have them on my 90. Driving on the freeway or anywhere around 2k rpm the drone is horrible. I really like the sound of Bassani mufflers though I never have seen any on a classic. I am thinking of putting those on my 70 but I can't justify the money right now since I already have some generic turbo mufflers...

I'm finishing up a 3 year restoration on my 1970 351 C Mach I. I have the stock engine, small cam and hooker headers. I had the maganaflow with the x pipe and really like the sound. I ran it strait headers for so long in the garage and up and down the drive way I didn't think anything would quieten it down. I'm happy with the installation and sound.

I think they use Borla on the newer mustangs? I like the sound of the Magnaflow and the Borla, not a big fan of the Flowmaster.

Tenneco makes dynomax as I recall, and allot if not all of OEM mustang exhaust is from that company.

I'm another one that's not a fan of flow masters or any chambered exhaust, too loud and the drone literally gives me a splitting headache after just a few minutes around 2000rpm.

Another brand not a lot of folks talk about is the warlock, I had a set on my '90, they were great cause they had cut outs built right in, three wing nuts and you were straight through, it was a great set up. Summit sold them last I checked. They sounded GREAT for a daily driver / street strip car, a lot like magnaflow/dynomax, not as loud as the flows.... but in less than 5 minutes, you drop the plugs out and be straight piped!

I ran a nice set of Turbo style mufflers on the SCJ & 2 1/4" pipe. Decently quiet until I jumped on it, then it was a beautiful, low rumble. You knew the car had power by the tone, but it did not advertise it just cruisin' around.

i have a set of generic (walker built) turbo muffs on my car with 2.5" exhaust and hedman shorty headers. the sound is nice, it has a nice burble at idle but crips and clean sounding when you nail it. can't say what it's like on the road and whether or not there is any droning since the car is still garage bound but at least in it's current state it sounds really good. i have to admit it was a little louder than i expected but this is the first 2.5" exhaust system i've had, everything else has been 2.25" or cobbled together factory bits with 2.25" muffs and tailpipes.

I am totally pleased with the magnaflow 2.5 stainless setup on my 69 fastback. Sounds great and throaty at idle, while clean and not too loud at higher rpms. Never noticed any unpleasant drone. Bassani doesn't have anything for classic mustangs that I'm aware of. Shop around if you decide on the magnaflow - prices seem to vary quite a bit and there are great deals out there.

Yeah, Bassani doesn't make a kit but since I have to get a custom exhaust to get around my TCP center SFC I would just get just the mufflers(no room for an H or X pipe either). Some sort of equalizer... most likely an X pipe will also help you obtain the sound you wanted.

It's funny you say you want a more modern sound, because most of the late-model guys want an old-school sound to their Cobras. Personally, I think each is great in their own way. And in reality, it'll be impossible to get that close to a modular overhead cam sound.

If you want to get a modern sound (at least as close to the late-model sound as you can get), go with Borla and some type of intermediate x-pipe (Borla doesn't make them, but Magnaflow and Bassani both do). Borla and Bassani (also good imo, but I like the T-304 stainless Borla uses as opposed to Bassani's lower-grade 409) are two of the more popular late-model aftermarket manufacturers. Both will deliver a nice, aggressive, throaty sound in a much more refined manner than Flowmasters.

And keep in mind when I say Borla, I'm excluding the XR-1s. These can be very loud, poppy, raspy, etc and great for what they are (I chose these for my '98 Cobra and '65 Fastback), but I don't think these are what you're looking for. I think Borla XSs will deliver exactly what you seem to want.

Have you looked at the muscle car kits Magnaflow sells-

about $400 for a full stainless kit including the X pipe/ hangers- that is with the good stainless- not that 304 or 409 crap- (304 work hardens, 409 rusts)

If you want a newer sound, Saleen and Roush both use Magnaflow on their new cars-

69Bradley, I guess I shouldn't have generalized and used the term "guys". Given this information, I'd definitely stay away from Borla XR-1s, for every girl I've had in my Cobra has absolutely hated the thing; I guess it's "obnoxious".

Anyway, Magnaflow uses a higher grade than T-304? I know 304 can be more of a challenge to bend, but this is about the best stainless anyone uses for cat-back and intermediate crossover construction. I had a Borla T-304 system on my first Mustang, drove it everyday for 4 years [through IL winters] and was able to polish it to a mirror shine using nothing more than Mothers Mag & Aluminum polish and a little "elbow grease". I ran over speed bumps, etc [again, it was my first car and I was only 16] so these systems really hold up well. The only higher-grade stainless I've seen used in automotive exhaust systems would be certain turbo headers made of 321. Heck, I always thought Magnaflow used 304 as well. And Saleen must have recently switched to Magnaflow, because they used Borla from '94 to at least '04. Magnaflow is still a great kit, but I think Borla has a much more modern and exotic tone (one of the goals Ford had with the new Mustangs was to make them sound more vintage); but it's also a bit more expensive.

Actually Saleen switched to Borla back in 01/02 I beleive- its been a while-

I had an 02 Saleen at one time and it had Magnaflow on it-

304's biggest problem is work hardening and cracking- in fact one of my buddies had an 05 Saleen- and I guess Saleen switched back to Borla for a couple of months-

but anyways his exhaust started rattling when the car was 3 months old, and it was because the muffler cracked, and he was told by Saleen to bring it in, that they were going to issue a recall for all 05 Saleens built in the first 2 months because the Borla exhaust systems were falling apart- and that they were going back to the Magnaflow systems they were using in the past-

thats what I was told anyways-

Another Magnaflow vote. Dropped Flowmaster 40's because of drone.
The Magnaflow are nice and throaty when cruising but open up nicely @ WOT. Sound will of course depend on the engine pumping out the gases! I have a 400hp 10:1 compr. 351W.
