8 inch build up question

I know that the sacred 9 inch is probably the way to go, but I'm on a pretty tight budget. I've got a 70 coupe with the rock stock 8 inch that I'm planning on loading with 400 HP. 70 coupe details I'd like to get the 8 inch strong enough to handle this ammount of power (with limited slip if possible) for as cheap as possible. As of now this is what I've got in the car

Ferrea Stainless Valves
Comp Cams 280H-10 w/matching springs
Ford Racing Pedistal Mount Roller Rockers
Weiand X-celerator Intake
Holley 750 vac- secondarys (modded body with no choke)
C4 Trans (planning on 2400 Stall with a B&M transpack)
1 3/4 primary Hooker headers w/3 inch exhaust

Best guess is that I'll be around 400 HP at the crank. can the 8 inch be built to handle this with a reasonable ($300-$500) budgett?
 
Currie and Strange now retail 'super' 8-inch chunks that (they claim) will do this ok, but your budget may be too low for one of these. Check w them and see.

They do premium work for a premium price.
 
Considering frictional losses trough the transmission and the differential you might look into hardened axles. Dutchman claims their hardened axles are about 20-25% stronger than stock, but I don't have experience with hardened axles. I just thought you might want a place to start.
 
try ebay, the have some third center sections with posi for good prices, but your budget is kinda not gonna allow for that unless you use your stock 8" buy your own parts and then get someone to assemble it for FREE for you... by the way, the 8" is very similar to a 9 inch and is a good rear end. for not so crazy applications, it is actually better, less rotating weight means more hp to the wheels.
 
instead of getting a currie 8" pumpkin, get a price on a custom built 9" housing with axles, as i recall they run about $800 but it has been awhile since i checked, spec it out with 31 slpine axles. and then rebuild a 9" pumpkin yourself, or have it rebuilt. the other option you have is to buy a 9" rear from a lincoln mark 4 and have it narrowed to fit. that will cost alot less that getting a new 9" from currie or strange engineering, or mark williams.
