84 5.0 runs when it feels like it??

I have an 84 mustang that will turn over and run when it feels like it, but usually it won't start right off. I usually have to sit and crank it and apply gas at the same time and if that won't work I wait about 5-10 mins and try again. Checked the spark plugs and they are fine and replaced the fuel filter which seemed to help for a little while but after a few days it went back to not starting as much. I think maybe I need to adjust the carborator but im not sure how to. Fuel pump comes on when I turn key as well. help?

ok sorry im kind of new to this since the car actually belongs to my gf and not me but she doesn't know much either... um yes it is an electric and yes i am pumping the pedal a few times before start... im not sure how much psi its as but i do know it was replaced about a year ago i think (she bought the car and it ran fine all the way from houston to here... about a 6 hour drive... and then the problem started) um the plugs look fine... dry and if you try it too many times (about an hour of waiting 10 mins and trying again) and it fails every time it does start to smell like gas, but when we were replacing the fuel filter and it didn't start my friend checked in the carb and said it didn't look like it was getting any gas... no leaks of any kind though... i've been told it could be the ignition module but can't find any very detailed info on how to replace it... and I went ahead and bought one since it was only $17 and my father is dead set on that being the problem but i don't know.. oh and sorry about the delayed post... ive been moving and haven't had internet acess

*edit* I'm beggining to lead more towards a different problem seeing as how i was told that it's usually the module when the car gets hot where as my problem happens hot or cold... i was also told that maybe my kill switch... it seems to be loose and i was told that the sensor might be messed up or something like that causing the car to cut the fuel on and off...help?!
