86 Marquis questions.

Morning all,

My son just bought a 86 Marquis Brougham with the 3.8 V6. 1st problem is it is shifting real hard into 3rd. fluid is fresh but overfilled by about a inch on the dipstick. 2md problem is, I was test driving it & parked it to think about what I was going to do & then it would not start. Just crank but no attempt to fire. It started perfect up until then. There is spark coming from the coil but haven't checked at the plug since 1 or 2 plugs would not stop the care from firing. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You should be able to pull codes
Take a shot of starting fluid into the TBI, if it starts then it's fuel delivery issue, do you have tools to check spark and fuel systems?
I do have the most of the tools. I do not have a timing light anymore since I haven't used one in about 15 years. I tried pulling codes using the paperclip method but the engine light just stayed lit solid. No response. I did get it started funny enough by jumping the battery. Running real rough. I'm going to try again today with a real jumper wire. I am also going too check the fuel pressure. Not sure what it is supposed to be but I figure, 35-45 should be enough.

The Innova 3145 should read that computer, inexpensive on Amazon, a local slo'rillys may have one
Honestly, I would send the computer to ECUExchange, (stangnet should get a kick back or something from all the work they get from us) almost 30 years old that computer is getting long-in-the-tooth. Then you know it works properly.
BTW, is there any mods done to this?
Emissions stuff still there?
Also look at the ignition switch under the dash on the steering column, I imagine they are in the same spot as the fox mustang. Not the key switch, the mustangs had an issue with the switch heating up the connector and gives intermittent electrical problems.

Couple of things. I had replaced the distributor cap & rotor & goofed up 2 of the wires. Dumb mistake. Starts & runs fairly smooth. Previous owner said it was due for plugs. I am going to take care of that. I also checked for vacuum leaks & all seems fine.

Probably needs a new CFI injector in the throttle body or a new in tank fuel pump
Buy a Super Star or Super Star II scan tool specifically made for your Ford?
Just testing the fuel pressure on those old CFIs was difficult
I have the test apparatus manifold with the little hose, still it's difficult
