I bought the 9" in my mustang from a swap meet. It's out of a 57 country squire and is bone stock other than a 28 spline detroit locker. It's been rebuilt but I stated to get a howling noice out of it and swapped the gears thinking it was gear noise.

The gears weren't the problem, the carrier seems to be bad. A switch to a currie 9+ is $250. A decent stocker is $75. The axels are brittle, old, waiting to break 28 spline originals that also need to be replaced.

This motor makes aprox 350hp and will rarely if ever see slicks. The next motor will probably be a 450hp 347.

Should I buy currie 28 splines with a stock carrier for $475 or should I buy the 9+ carrier, 31 spline axles and now a new detroit locker for $1100. Money is a major issue.

Will hardend 28 splines and a stock carrier be enough?

yeah the currie 28 splines should be fine. you can probably get your housing straightened for less as well. you'll probably have to call a few driveline shops to find out if anyone in your area can do it. there was an article in one of the mustang mags a few years back showing how Currie straightens a stock housing

Currie will tell you that the stock carrier is good to 400hp. They are probably being cautious, as it will "handle" more if you are not running slicks. The important thing is how much power the rear sees BEFORE the tires break loose. After that, the load on the rear isn't going up much.

Thanks guys, I was afraid to see my budget for the year go up in the rear. The carrier and the axels both need to be replaced before one of them brakes and costs me some big cash to fix.

I'm trying to be frugel not cheap.:D

why are you going with a locker?

look into a limited slip or torsen type diff. you'll be a lot happier. that is unless all you want to do is drag race.

I already have the locker in it. When I rebuilt the rear, the car was set up to drag race. I thought that a limited slip would be better myself, but most of the track guys here seem to be using a locker in their cars. From what I'm told, I should expect the front to want to push, but I can tune some of that out with sway bars.

locker isn't too bad in fast corners, it's just low speed stuff when you're on the throttle, expect it to plow.

also makes some helacious noises when you're hard on/off the gas...

Spoon in the garbage disposal noises?:D

I'll give it a try and see if I like it. There is no autocross around me just Gingerman raceway with is an open track.
