I bought the 9" in my mustang from a swap meet. It's out of a 57 country squire and is bone stock other than a 28 spline detroit locker. It's been rebuilt but I stated to get a howling noice out of it and swapped the gears thinking it was gear noise.
The gears weren't the problem, the carrier seems to be bad. A switch to a currie 9+ is $250. A decent stocker is $75. The axels are brittle, old, waiting to break 28 spline originals that also need to be replaced.
This motor makes aprox 350hp and will rarely if ever see slicks. The next motor will probably be a 450hp 347.
Should I buy currie 28 splines with a stock carrier for $475 or should I buy the 9+ carrier, 31 spline axles and now a new detroit locker for $1100. Money is a major issue.
Will hardend 28 splines and a stock carrier be enough?
