I am beginning to put together a 9 inch rear for my 68 Mustang and was thinking that I should put on some disc brakes in the rear. After looking up some previous posts it seems as if the Versailles/Granada rear discs setup seems to be the best. Is this true?? Any other options, I read something about Ford Explorer rear disc brakes. Could someone enlighten me to the best and most cost effective swap. Any writeups would be appreciated as well.

Thanks everyone.

Granada/Versailles rear discs are only great if you are getting the whole rear end. Parts are getting a little hard to find as they were not made for too long. The rear explorer discs (if you have a late model big bearing 9") and Ultrastang's rear disc setups are the cheapest approach. Ultrastang's brackets ues the lincoln mark 7 rear discs (vented 11" rotors). www.ultrastang.com

you will need a different master cylinder as well.

I put 85 Seville disc brakes on the Grenada rear end in my 65 Mustang. 2 of the 4 bolts fit the housing perfectly and it was easy to drill the others. It fits nicely. Parts are easy to get. Let me know if you want to see the details, I have a .doc file with photos and text.

buy an after market set up there are a bunch of different companies willwood ssbc baer master power brakes. The older setup is junk.
Junk? I think he means THEY'RE CHEAPER THAN THE ONES HE PAID $500+ FOR HIS :D :D :D . Nothing wrong with the factory disc setups, I had a Versaillles rear on my 67 427 fastback, and it had no problem hauling the car down to a dead stop from 140 mph. For discs, also you might try the setups from 90's Crown Vics. I saw one here the other day in a taxi cab Vic, that looked as though they might also work on a 9" rear. Never went back to check the bolt pattern on the 8.8 they were on to see if they'd possibly fit an 8 or 9 inch. The vesailles setup requires custom axles, the offset is different on these from the drum brake axles. :nice:

compared to all the new stuff thats out there they are junk they are no where near as effective as the new style setups parts are way to hard to find. Ebrake set ups are much easier on the new stuff also. I've personally installed lots of the new set ups as well as the granada versailes and in my personal opinion the old stuff is junk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :nice:

Ever try to go into the local parts house in BF Egypt and ask for parts for your "custom" high dollar rear discs, when something goes wrong with them, like a small part fell off ? Go ahead and spend mega bucks for them, I'll stick with the Low-tech-dollar stuff and stop just as quickly as you can.   I'll spend the dollars I save in parts to make it go faster. :rlaugh: :rlaugh:

I'm sorry I've never had any "small parts" fall off of my high dollar setups. But there are lots of systems out there that are not high dollar items to which you refer too. and as far as going faster with that extra money how much faster are we talking about?

Thanks for the replies everyone, I appreciate it. I was thinking of going with one of the kits for the rear, however I would like to do this with a budget in mind as long as each setup is safe and effective.

Do you think you could send me a picture and the text?

Also I have 14 Magnum 500's, will I have any fit problems?

Monk, email me at [email protected] and I'll send the pics. I'm running Torque Thrust Ds (15") on mine with plenty of room, but I don't know about the Magnums. The Seville parts are cheap at the junker (I paid $30 for the pair, complete with rotors, brackets and calipers) so you can try and see and if they don't, you haven't lost much.

Of course, once you do it, go with new calipers, pads, and hoses. Braking is too important to leave completely to junkyard parts. The main thing you need from the junkyard is the mounting bracket, and cores for the calipers.
