91 Gt Dies When Stopping

Hey guys. I have a 1991 GT that I need help with. When I first got it (about a week ago) the car would idle around 500-600 rpm. When I would put it in neutral with the clutch in to come to a stop at a light, the car would die unless I tapped on the gas to prevent it. The Air filter was extremely dirty and crushed, so I replaced it with a new one. I also cleaned the MAF and IAC. After cleaning these and also replacing the plugs wires, it now idles around 800 or so, but it will still die sometimes when stopping. Any suggestions as to what is causing this problem?

Check for vacuum leaks. Could be a brake booster leaking vacuum, or the IAC might need to be replaced altogether.

That's kinda of interesting I bought a 91 GT back in February and had the same problem. I don't know how long it has been since your car has had a tune up and a fluid change but that is exactly what I did and now it runs like a champ and I have better gas mileage.

It's in the shop right now for a few leaks, to include an exhaust leak and the guy is supposed to check for vacuum leaks as well. I should have it back by monday and i'll let ya know if I'm still having a problem.

I work with a guy that had a '90 GT all stock and he says his sometimes does the same thing as well. I have replaced the plug wires and air filter. The plugs, and fuel filter are being replaced this weekend. So, hopefully, all is well when she gets back to me.

You can guess at the problem and throw parts at it, or you can use the checklist to help you find the problem quickly and inexpensively. The checklist is right here in the Stangnet 5.0 Tech forum and you don’t have navigate to some other unknown web site. It‘s free and doesn’t cost anything: at last count there were more than 103,000 visits and still climbing

The quick and easy way to dump the codes is in there too, and all you need to do it is a paper clip! The first two posts contain all the fixes & updates. At last count there were 24 possible causes and fixes for surging idle/stall problems. I continue to update it as more people post fixes or ask questions.
