I found a car that the guy is willing to part out, its a 92 5 spd with factory mass airflow, will it work for my car? I herd the only yrs us SD guys can used to convert is 89, is this true?
You can use the mass air harness, eec, along with the meter for your car. You can even take the entire main harness and swap it into your car if you're feelin saucey. When I converted mine, i got an A9P eec, factory mass air meter and the mass air harness from www.stangparts.com and did the swap. It was very simple, there are a bucnh of write-ups about it on this site. Good luck. It may not be worth the trouble if the car is stock or has only minimal mods, but once you get more aftermarkets parts goin in, the mass air conversion really shines.
Steeda sells a nice mass air conversion kit. Like AlmostFinished has mentioned, I wouldn't convert over just yet, once you start doing some heavy modications, thats when you should switch over. One thing that is bad with Speed Density is that once you get bigger heads, cam, or intake, the stang will start surging on you unless you change to mass-air because the speed density computers cannot handle the bigger power, but mass-air can handle it all. I have no idea why they even thought of making speed density, only made it from '86-'88. Luckily, I have an '89, the first year of mass-air computers. You have a decision, either go mass-air, or go carbureator, choice is yours. I'm sure you'll know when to make the switch.
93 have a slightly different harness since the fuel pump relay for older ones are under the ds seat. 93s is under the maf. I'm going through this now. Theres an extra plug at the cu, not sure what its for yet. Also figured out the relay wiring, need to hook it up tomorrow. Put the 93 harness in an 89... end of the weekend I'll know more.
id do it right away, it will run way better. the common idea is that maf is better than SD because it "learns". speed density is actualy superior in that it is tuned for a specific setup (in your case a stock mustang) and doesnt need to learn. i am going to switch over to a megasquirt standalone FMS which is speed density. but for the most part, a maf system will perfrom great all around.
forgot to add that for a larger maf meter if your on a budget, find a meter off a later mustang gt, cobra (80mm) or an explorer (70mm). i personally run a explorer maf and helped it out alot on the top end.
