My 94 cobra has been stalling on me intermittently for about 4 months now. It started out happening every now and then but has now progressed to where the engine dies every time I drive. Today if I idle the car in my driveway (I don't dare take it out on the road anymore) it runs excellent but stalls out within 5 minutes. Sometimes when the engine dies, it wont come back on. One time I waited an hour on the side of the road until the engine would finally kick back on. At first I believed this to be a fuel pump issue but when I turn the key on I hear the whirring sound from the fuel pump telling me it's on. During this whirring sound I hear what sounds like liquid being pumped in and that's when I know the car will start because when I don't hear that noise the engine doesn't start up. Besides dying on me the car idles and runs like it should. I'm currently on a really tight budget so I'm going to try and do all the nice cheap work and see if that helps. Let me know if any of you has had a similar problem or may be able to diagnose my problem.

No I haven't pulled them yet since I dont have a scan tool. If theres a way I could get one I'd do it. A friend of mine works at a ford dealership and said he'd scan it at the shop but thats a 20 minute drive which with my problems of stalling I very likely wouldn't make it, not to mention I'm now currently unregistered. I'm in a jam right now

Codes can be pulled with a paperclip.
FWIW, if you talk to your friends about pulling codes, you need a code reader, not scanner (the difference is hundreds of dollars).

When it stalls, check fuel pressure, spark and injector pulsing.

Good luck.

I was messing around with my car yesterday and it started everytime I tried but I could hear a whirring sound coming from the fuel pump the entire time the car ran. I've heard that a dying fuel pump would make noise. The car stalls within 5 minutes of operation everytime. Do you believe this could be the sole problem?

I wouldn't even guess about it because 2 minutes worth of diagnostics [when it stalls and won't restart] will get you going in the right direction.

If you think it's your Fuel pump, put a gauge on it and let it stall. Try to restart it and see if your fuel pressure is above 30 PSIG. This is part of the diagnostics noted in the previous post.

Good luck.
