95 gt mileage HELP!

My auto 95 gt usually gets around 18mpg. Last week, it was getting about 12 and now this week its getting 8. It runs fine and feels the same as it usually does, it just guzzles gas. I have no idea what the problem is and I figured you guys could probably help me out before I go and spend all kinds of money finding out what the problem is.

try a tune up new plugs wires exc. that should help bad plugs means more gas

Are you sure your trip odometer isnt crapping out?

Losing that kind of mileage without drivability issues or a CEL would be kinda weird.

Yeah i'm positive. I make the same drive every day and I make sure it isn't putting on too little mileage per trip.

Thanks you guys for the help. I'll upgrade to a k&n filter and switch out the spark plugs tomorrow

Have you changed gas stations? Have they changed their "formula"?

I used to travel the EXACT same mileage to work, a few years back. I had a Toyota pickup with the 22R and 5 speed. A normal fill up would get me to and from work all week. (About 300 miles.) I'd need to fill up again, on the way home on Friday. Well, the gas station I used, had a "sale". They dropped the price about 20 cents per gallon from their normal price. The exact same drive and type of driving made it so that I needed to fill up on THURSDAY MORNING! That is a significant change. So, I changed gas stations the next week and the milage went right back to normal. I'll bet your station has changed something on you.

yeah one of my friends suggested that and I did notice a drop in mileage going from one station to another a while back. But i'm sure its not the gas this time considering my mileage has been cut to less than half of what it should be. I'm taking it into my usual shop tomorrow to get it checked out and fixed. I'll be on tomorrow night or maybe tuesday with an update on what the problem was.

Update on situation.
My dad handed the mustang down to me about a year and a half ago and failed to inform me that it had been 5 years since the last checkup. That made me more than a little angry. Anyways.. i took it to the shop and they told me that is was a $2,000 dollar fix. This includes new fuel filter, spark plugs, air filter, transmission fluid was black..... the list goes on and on. Thanks for all of your suggestions. I'm pretty sure every suggestion I got was correct along with about 30 more problems.

$2000 is a lot of money.at the shop,most of that is labor fee's.the fuel filter,tranny fluid and filter,air filter,and spark plug and wires you can do yourself and save a lot of cash.are the other problem's major,or something you think you can handle yourself?seriously consider doing the work yourself.get a hayne's and chilton's book and follow the instructions.ask us questions if you get stuck,we'll be glad to help.

At the ford store I sell parts at, you would only be looking at 800ish, not near 2000 by any means. Thats extremely high.

Yeah i listed some of the simpler problems. There are quite a few more problems. I have the chiltons manual and I checked out the problems and I could probably do a few things myself but the rest is way over my head. I figured I might as well get all of it done professionally since i couldnt do the majority of the work. At least this way I can blame it on someone else if something goes wrong. Its really unfortunate that this happened but I'm also kind of excited because my baby will be running like new

will do. I have a black saleen spoiler and a chin spoiler sitting in my garage waiting to be installed. I should have some pictures up some time this weekend

if you can,please post a complete list of the work that needs to be done on your car.alot of people are curious,including me.alot of the work may not be as hard as it seams.with some help,you may be able to save some cash.

Moved to 94-95 Tech.

Start by going over the usual items. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, air filter, clean the MAF, and since the car did sit for a while, change all of your fluids. The transmission fluid should be red, so that's definitely gotta go. How many miles on the car, and how old are the O2 sensors? Try pulling codes, since the CEL doesn't need to be illuminated for codes to be stored. I'd also like to know what the shop wants to do that will cost $2000.

Here's what a local reputable shop roughly charges for some of the stuff you mentioned:

Tune-up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, PCV, and fuel filter) $200 incl. labor
Auto Tranny Fluid Flush/Filter $120
Air filter (do a K&N yourself for $40 ish)

I'd add in these while your at it:

Drain/Refill brake fluid
Flush/fill coolant
Flush fill power steering fluid
Differential flush/fill
Injector cleaning (you can do Seafoam in the oil/gas/intake for $12)

All that stuff above, I mean everything........would probably cost you less than $600.00.

Let's see your list. Whether you post it or not, I'd recommend getting a second opinion. No sense wasting so much money that could end up going towards mods or anything else.
