my car wont shut off i found out it is the plastic rod between the lock cylinder and the ignition switch i got my cylinder out and the ignition switch out and the steering wheel off any ideas how to change this rod?

same thing happened to me the first day i bought my car used, at the time I didn't know anything about it and some crooked mechanic charged me 500$ to fix it
hey i had the same problem... believe it or not goto a local locksmith shop... that's who did mine.. the piece is on 25 bucks but labor is a bit much... total was like $175 hope that helps.
can you change your ignition key thing? i have done that before you need a steering wheel puller and the key in the on position....which you have then the old key mechanisim will come out and you can put a new one in.
i dont know if that will fix the problem but maybe food for thought
For future reference, you don't have to pull the wheel to work on things in the area. I've removed my lock cylinder twice, and never took the wheel off. I just removed the column panels, turned the switch to "on", and pressed the "safety pin" in ..... she slid right out.
good job.. took me alittle while to figure out what was wrong with mine.. the car would start. but not turn off.i was the second rod that pushes the ignition swicth.. the pin was broken were the first one and the second one meet..i went to ford dealer thinking they would have no idea what parts i needed. but they said that is a common problem...10 a peice. i replaced both. the 2nd one is the easy one to put in. you have to take apart the whole steering column. take off steering wheel. unbolt it were the tilt steering is. slide the steering shaft out pretty self explanitory..just have to take the whole thing apart. and need patience..really not hard at all..
grannycar explained it all, yes u have to pull the wheel the key tumbler pull the column out take the 2 bolts on the side that hold the tilt part together and then the new piece has to pin together with the 2nd piece and put it all back together and your rolling. they told me it was common too, yep i paid $10.55 for the part and spent 2 days tearing my car apart to do it but i didnt have to pay some mechanic like 200 to fix it.im glad to have it running again now i can finish tuning the new motor
