I am trying to remove the starte from a 96 GT (4.6). I believe there is a third bolt ontop of the starter than I can not see. Can someone fill me in on a clue as to how to remove this? Thanks.

Yeah there is a third bolt and it SUCKS! the way I get them out is a long extension with a swivel On my own cars I don't put the third bolt back in

Use lots of extensions and go through the k-member.

A 13mm flex socket works for me. Long extensions through the K-member. Can be easier if a buddy turns the ratchet while a 2nd person guides the socket onto the bolt (by feel).

When it comes time to re-install, lightly tape the bolt to the socket to aid in getting it started. Once started, remove the tape.

Once you have done it a few times, then it is easier to visualize the location of the bolt and it will go much quicker/easier.

Drop the K-Member

Or do what has been said already. Two people will make it easier.

Yea, I remember that #$%@ bolt when I was doing the clutch in my 96. Double jointed wrists and elbows help too.

What everyone said. It is a PITA!

A nice flex 13mm socket will help though. You will have to "feel" you way around for that bolt.

And whatever you do, do not put it back in lol.

I just did my starter on my 97 mustang gt was not all that bad like he said a 13 swevil socket and two short extentions then a 3/8 regular swevil then come through the front by sway bar you will have to add extentions as you go come in next to engine mount not through it.that's the 4.6
