i bought a 98 cobra about 2 weeks ago and i have a question. it just doesn't have the get up and go that it should. I know that that isn't a very good description, but i figured somebody may have had this same issue. It was even worse than it is now, but i changed the PCV valve and spark plugs and it is doing a little better. It doesn't have the stutter that it used to. So my question is "Can anyone help me?" Thanks to all that help me out!

Has anything been done to the car? Any mods that you kow of?

How many miles are on the car?

Have you changed the oil to synthetic yet?

Is there a hesitation, surge, etc. or is it smooth, but lacking power?

At around 3200 RPM, so you feel a little bump in power? Not much, but a tad.

Let's get started and see what we can find.

Their is 38000 miles on my car. I haven't changed the oil yet because i haven't drove it much because of the weather, so i am not sure if it is synthetic or not. Their is some hesitation when i accelerate at a rapid pace, and when i punch it, it really doens't hesitate much, but it doesn't have the power it should.

also it does have a few mods. it has off road h-pipe, flowmasters. k&n, sub frame connectors, springs, 18in roush wheels, pro 5.0 shifter. As far as mods that would slow it up for any reason, it doesn't really have any that i know of.

Have you ridden in any other Cobras? I'm asking because these suckers really lack on low end torque, esp with the stock rear end gear.

The HP comes alive in the upper RPM range because of the dual over head cams. Don't be scared to take it to 6800.

I would alsor think about a rear end gear. 4.10s or 4.30s. No less than 4.10s. That'll wake her up.

Make sure you change the fuel filter asap. If it's never been done, it's waaay past due. Could be some junk in there causing a little fuel starvation.

Not sure on the rest since there are no codes.

Did you change the wires also? I changed mine when my car had a slight hesitation and no more hesitation. I would definitely have the IMRC's checked out though.
Get some 4.30's too, they will make you want to drive your car all the time. I love my car with my gear, o/r x, magnaflow cat-back, and shifter. Keep us posted on whats wrong with the car

No I didn't change the wires because I didn't want to get cheap ones and just getting the car I don't have the extra money for good wires. i have a set of unused 3.73's that i was going to put in my 89 gt. I thought about selling those to get new gears for my cobra. This is a dumb question but what exactly are the IMRC's??

Intake Manifold Runner Controls, they open up at around 3200 rpm's to switch to another length intake runners.

Is it expensive to get IMRC's checked out or is it something i might be able to do.
You can check them and clean them yourself if you have a free weekend day and a good set of tools with an in-lbs torque wrench...Should only take about 6-7 hours to take them out clean them and put them back in...Here's a good write up on how to do it with pictures(You'll need Adobe Acrobat 5.0 or higher to view it)

Checking is super easy ... just rev the motor to 3500 and look to see that the cables behind the intake are turning.

Also, get a set of factory wires off Ebay. I paid $42 for them and they are perfect. There is a guy selling one set at a time on there now. Not this guy http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33692&item=2459370668, although that's not a bad price, but another that I can't find right now. He always has the same picture and the wires are laying out on a bench with the clamps still attached.

I really would look towards wires.

Good luck...
