I had a very similar problem a few weeks back. http://www.stangnet.com/mustang-forums/828340-car-wont-idle-sometimes.html

It could be a few different things, but most likely it is the idle air control valve. That's what it was for me.

It's very easy to remove, I replaced it in less than 10 minutes. It's held on by two 8mm bolts on the front side of the upper intake plenum. It looks like this:

And is located here:

You can get it from any auto parts store, but I found it cheapest at Advance Auto.

Sounds like the IAC to me as well. They are notorious for causing issues on our cars. You can try cleaning yours first by removing it and spraying it out with some electronics safe parts cleaner. Sometimes they get gunked up and don't function correctly.

Do you have a check engine light or anything? If so, if you can get the car to an Advanced Auto or Autozone they will pull your trouble codes for free.

Cleaning the IAC will only get rid of your problem very momentarily, go ahead and replace the IAC, some people go through two IAC's a year.
And some peoples car actually idle fine the w/IAC deleted.

IAC's are common, but don't rule out a potential vaccum leak either
