Gears will make the biggest impact.

Leftover money (in no particular order):

CAI, midpipe, catback, shifter, good set of tires, etc...

Yes, gears, I say 4.10's but some people will tell you higher. Then it depends on how you drive the car, daily driver, etc.
I'm going with a JLT RAI. Then Bassani X, then some type of catback, MGW shifter.
All above are my opinion only

I plan for this car to be a daily driver...but i'll have plenty of stoplight races. I just want a quick car that isn't too inefficient.

Gears also sound pretty expensive and very difficult to install

Price to performance, gears are going to be the best mod for your car. Don't be cheap if you want to compete! Anyways, some of the less expensive mods you might be able to afford now as previously mentioned.. shifter (mgw and pro 5.0 base), X/H pipe, steeda pulleys, cat back, some type of K&N CAI. If you aren't doing it yourself - headers will be expensive too, but look for about +15rwhp with those added. When you are done with all the bolt ons, get a dynotune with an aftermarket chip.

catback

Get a good flowing catback like magnaflow and you will be able to feel the difference pretty much thru all RPMs. I was amazed when I got my Magnaflow mufflers.
Gears are gonna be the best $500 (installed) OR THERE ABOUTS you can spend on your car. Next summer those 4.10s are mine!

About how much would the 4.10s be parts and labor?

only 320, I'm not sure where the only comes in. The stock 05 GT is only 300. Anyway, what does your wife have that you might trade and does she know about this?

Start off with what you can afford then. Like I'm going to go with a JLT RAI first. I have a midpipe and catback lined up, but I'm getting an unbeliveable deal on both from a guy who traded his 01 for an 03.
I'm going to do the JLT RAI, midpipe/catback then that'll be it for a while I guess

when i first bought my conv. back in 2000 i was smoking stock camero ss convertibles. So out of the box it was pretty much a drivers race. First mods i did were cold air and pulleys. Cheap amd easy. But be careful once you start moddifying it hard to stop. Now I have like $45k in a car worth 15 (cost of new car included) But when i look at any other $45k car there is nothing out there that can touch me. Got to stop modding now so i can save for gt-500.

The only thing that i'm looking forward to doing right now is beating stock z28s and trans ams. I have two friends with trans ams and i want to be able to compete. Will that gear setup have me locked in? or will i need more mods?

NEVERMIND, THE DEALER IS SMOKING SOME REAL GOOD STUFF!!!!! they want $22,000 for a 99 cobra!!! i bought my 05 gt for $26,000 the cobra is 6 years old!! it is a real clean car, but not worth almost twice the book value....i looked on kbb.com, and it said RETAIL VALUE is $13,350. add in an extended warranty and BAM! i am near the same price as my 05 gt....

I have a 97 cobra and last night I pulled 1/2 a car on a 99 Z28. My top was down and his top was up. Learn how your car drives first then worry about mods. And if you really want to beat trans ams and z28s then go for a 96-98 (live axle) car. They are cheaper too
