As the title says my A/C recently took a turn for the worse. When I bought it back in Jan and up until last week or so it blew ICE COLD. Now it will only work periodically when it wants to.

I dont know what to look for to even check what I need to do? Should I look into taking it somewhere or is this a task that one can take on themselves?

Also, A/C related when at idle for an extended period of time, the tach will bog down and act like its going to die --- and then rev back up slightly. I usually just turn the A/C off when it does this.... but any suggestions?

Check your pressures. With the A/C on it should, for the most part, run continously. If it frequently drops out and then kicks back in, you could possibly have low refrigerant levels. With the pressure drops, the low pressure switch cuts the A/C off.

The engine will bog and raise RPM when it does this.

In DEFROST, the A/C compressor will frequently kick in and out, so it's normal in this mode.

Our cars take R134A, so it's easy to go to a parts store and grab a can and fill it...if it is low

Yep, just sounds like the refrigerant is low.

Low Refrigerant or it could possibly be a bad clutch coil on the compressor.

Most likly low refrigerant, let a shop check it for leaks or if you have your own set of gauges then check the pressures if you have low high and low side pressures then that indicates undercharge.
