A/C unit causing Power Loss

Hello Everyone....When we mess with the 2 wires that run from the AC unit my car (93 GT) loses all power except for headlights and the dome lights. It seems like it would short out when the wires would touch the AC Unit near the bottom...We moved these wires away from it and everything was fine...We then decided to try and turn on the AC as soon as the know went to MAX my car lost power again...could this be just a wire that needs to be fixed or could it be the relay? We were thinking inginition stuff, but I think it might not because of being able to short out the car with touching the AC wires. The wires that I am talking about are 1 that comes from the top of the AC Unit and goes toward the solonoid and the other runs under the intake and seems to connect to the relay box on the firewall.

The problem started on Sunday and it died while driving it...It died when I was coming up to a stop sign or light 3 times...the problem started right after putting on the AC....the 2 times after that the car died out the AC wasnt on.

Your help is greatly appreciated

There is a FREE recall on Ford ignition switches. They overheat and sometimes catch fire.

Copy down you VIN number and call the Ford dealer nearest you. Tell them you want to see if the ignition switch recall for Fords & Mustangs was done on your car. They will ask for the VIN number & check it against the master database. If it isn't in the datbase, then you can schedule an appointment to have the switch replaced for free. The TSB is #95S28, and don't let them tell you that they don't do that anymore...

THey called back and said there was no open recall but I think he just went to ford.com and put in my vin under the recall area...I called 2 places and said that the TSB was just a bulliten and not a recall and I said that it says recall!! So who knows, I asked him about the stoping and said there is a short (no kidding, LOL) but said I need to do a BLC to find any openend wires...I dont have a machine to do this, so I am lost....and really need the car before my trip in 2 days. Could it really be the ignition if the AC is what is knocking it out?

Diagrams courtsey of Tmoss and Stang&2birds See http://www.veryuseful.com/mustang/tech/engine/ for more diagrams.

Do some chasing and you will find all the things that are on the same power source coming from the ignition switch as the A/C clutch. Compare that to your list of things that work and don't work. Make a chart and put things that work in one column and things that don't in another. Then see how many of don't work items connect to the fuses that connect back to the black/lt green power wire on the ignition switch. The numbers on the ignition switch diagram correspond to the fuse number on the fuse diagram.

The switch should be free if they were doing their job they way they are supposed to for cars that haven't bee fixed yet. It is a $10-$15 part at most auto parts stores.

See http://www.ford.com/en/vehicles/owners/recalls/default.htm to check for your vehicle for recalls & TSB's

Do a Google search on TSB 95S28 and see what you get.
