Driving my car down the e-way at 70 mph and suddenly the tach goes to zero and the check engine light comes on....it did it only for a moment, then the light went off and the tach went back up and things were normal again.

A few miles later, it did it again...same thing...tach drops to zero, check engine light comes on, for only a moment....the engine seemed to hesitate....so I took a side street.....drove another 15 miles or so...and everything was normal....

So, wtf was that about?

Last week I put in a new coil, wires, cap, rotor...because my car was difficult to start....after the new parts it ran perfect all week, until today.

Any thoughts?

That happen to me before it was my O2 sensors after, run the codes and see what you get.Mine went bad for some reason after i wash under my car. When i replace them everything was fine.

If you dont have a code reader they have one at walmart for $32 and it works good.

Pull the codes. Look for an IDM code, TFI or PIP codes. The fact that you lost your tach (its signal comes from the coil) tells you an ignition issue is likely.

Good luck.

Check the tan wire on the coil electrical connector and see it it's damaged or coming out, that's the one that goes to the tach.

Thanks, I'll take a look at the coil and make sure all is plugged in properly.....if so then I am off to buy/borrow a code reader to find out what is going on.....

Or you can retrieve the codes yourself. See here for more info.

Good luck.

Definatly sounds ignition related, it sounds like what happend when my PIP (also called stator, pick-up coil, ect.) went bad.

Ran the codes

Hey, I finally bought a code reader from Autozone.....I feel stupid though cause for the $35 I paid, I could have gotten one on line with a digital readout instead of the light flashy thing.....it is pretty cool though how it goes through the different tests...starts the fan, revs the engine...etc.

Anyway, I ran the codes and it gave me a PIP sensor failer as well as Oxygen sensor failure and a MAF low voltage reading........I am so relieved to finally know what the problem is....I should have just bought the stupid little code reader years ago....instead I tuned up and replaced lots of stuff I did not need to replace....oh well, it was time for a tune up anyway.
