I did a search and did not come up with what I needed to know. I have two questions concerning timing. First, I checked my timing and if I did it correctly than the timing marks on my balancer compared to the stationary mark if you were looking at it from front of engine is as follows: the base timing mark on the balancer is far left from the stationary mark. So does that mean that my timing is advanced. I think it was advanced to like twenty* or so. My balancer slipped and I had to replace but I just had not checked the timing yet. Second, what tool and how do I turn the distributor so I can set it back to base timing. Clockwise is for advancing and CCW is for retarding correct? Thanks for any clarification. Happy T-day!

What do you mean by the 'base timing mark'? Do you mean the 10 or 12* you want to run, or do you mean 0* (TDC)?

If the former, it does sound like you were advanced a good little bit.

I use a 1/4" socket, with a Universal swivel, and two long extensions, to loosen the dizzy. They do make special wrenches for this - I should get one.

You probably already saw it, but here is an article on doing timing.

Good luck bud, and happy T-day back atcha'.

If you can read a 20, then its adv...as it only goes to 10 or so the other way...
I happen to use a swivel adapter/small socket right at the end to snake in there...you only need to crack it a tad to move the dizzy..you want some resistance to turn it so it don't go all over the place...
Make sure its warm when you set it, and yank the spout...

The TOP of the tab is what your shooting at..

Yeah 10-12* mark, sorry. Alright cool, then I am on the right path. I will probably just pick up the tool to make it easier for me. So is it CW to advance and CCW to retard, right? Thanks guys! Enjoy the food, I know I will.

I will also say this. If using an adjustable light (where it has a dial knob on it to set the advance), make sure you have the knob set to 0 when using the method you are using.

Good luck.

If you sand the grunge away on the top, you'll see the word "time" embossed right into the timing tab...So yes, Red's the winner...
