When spring comes around i want to get my rearend beefed up but i'm not to sure what components i need to replace. I know i need 31 spline axles at least, but i've also heard of getting new spider gears, what is that exactly and is that necessary? Is it recommended to replace the factory traction lok differential with a detroit locker or something along those lines?any advice would be appreciated:SNSign:

talk with moser engineering. tell them what you want to do with the car and they will help you. if you go to 31 splines then you have to upgrade the locker. detroit tru tracs are what was reccommended to me

you're on the right track. 31 splines, new differential (auburn, eaton, FRPP,detroit locker, all depends on your application). you may also want to look into having the axle tubes and torque boxes welded while you're at it.

Can you explain a bit? I'm familiar with the torque boxes on the old fox bodies, but I just hadn't heard of doing them on the newer GTs. Is it just welding, or are there parts to buy?
Any pics?

I would do 31 spline axels, new diff, rear cover that will preload the main caps, gear ratio of your choice.

If you will be launching on slicks or very sticky tires look into the welding the torque boxes.

as to what rear diff you will run this is up to you. I personally think a detroit locker is worthless. there are twice as much money as a spool and I could not make one snap over with 35" boggers. I also broke the damn thing. If i were doing that truck over it would of had a spool.

my .02 is drag race run a spool.

streat use run a strong limited slip or possible and e-locker. they are very expensive so I will not run one. I am aftraid of breaking a $900 diff. I have not completely decided on diff yet. Leaning towards eaton.

i wouldnt "lean" towards an eaton. they are breaking too. like you said, the safest way to go is a spool but you lose a good bit of drivability. I havent ever heard of anyone breaking a detroit locker drag racing, of course i dont know too many people with them, but two guys i know are pretty hardcore and have good luck with theirs.

yeah you might not break one drag racing. I did that mud bogging. boggers get quite a bit of traction and a truck is alot heavier. I was just trying to point out they are very positive and very expensive so IMO the spool is a better choice.

I like corners too much so I am going Limited slip.

a few of the guys from md that broke eatons went to the trutrac. they didnt get a whole lot of passes on them but im sure if they start puking we will read about it come spring time :D

Do you guys think that some upgraded 28 spline axles and a rear end cover would provide some low end decent insurance for a car that sees the track occasionally? Maybe 2 to 3 times a year and on DRs.
theres a mach owner over on the mach registry that has 28 spline mosers and has been launching it i think on drag radials with a 125 shot for about a year now with no problems

I ended up going with 31 spline mosers, tru trac diff. and 4.10's

im sure it could help. i see more guys snapping axles on drag radials then busting rear ends. i dont think you have to worry about a cover either. hell if you just want to do that, just scoop up peoples stock stuff in the classifieds for 100bucks for diff and axles and have backups ready to go in instead of paying 300+ for some 28spline axles and diff cover

i am sure with so many racing 9" that i haven't heard of detroit locker breaking here or there, stuff happens. consider this, the detroit locker is used by 800+ hp nascar stocker. it is used by superstockers, i have seen it break with an original thundebolt. but that was a full bodied 427 side oiler with who knows how much torque. if you plan to go BIG hp. then Jacko is right. you get a little noise when you turn slowly and sharply. but in return you get a realtively cheap strong as hell unit. mini spools are the cheapest. if you do go spool, then also like Jacko said(funny huh) axles can break. i looks funny to see an axleshaft sliding out of the rear end at half track.(i am sure it doesn't feel funny to them) c-clip eliminators dude. but heck, how much power you got? 550 or more? (pardon the bad english. sometimes i am an english butcher). moser 28 spline are pretty strong. not case hardened like stocker, but through hardened and crome moly at that. what do you think Jacko?

i most likely am going to a spool in mine. its cheaper and lighter and less likely to break. but this isnt a DD. The locker at this point is the strongest diff you can get and still maintain a somewhat dd feel, although noisy and clunky :D. and again havent heard of anyone breaking one that i know drag racing, and the guys im talking about are pulling 1.50 60's so thats not all that hardcore, but no joke either.
