Advice on what to do in college

I'm in a community college right now but i want to start taking classes for my major. My 2nd semester is coming up.
Heres the deal, I love computers have been using them since before i was working on cars and such, but i also love cars. I know that most of the time computers makes more money but im not sure in computer field what exactly i want to do.

I was first thinking computer networking but theres not alot of college that do that it seems, but question is what in computer field is a good career choice and makes a good amount of money?

Any opinions are welcomed.

How about working on computers in cars?

Depending on what you are going to do in computers, the field is kinda saturated right now. After the big boom and the declining economy, a lot of the computer tech people got the boot. And a lot of companies are pretty stringent on their hiring.

THat being said, I know a lot of people that are in the field, and make anywhere from 60,000 - 100,000.

I'm in the computer field myself. I would recommend getting into the security aspect of it. Get a security certification and you're guaranteed a well paying job.

maybe computer programming or computer engineering? I'm taking a microprocessor course right now and I HATE that stuff. Its so confusing. I give those guys who write computer code a lot of credit. Their job must suck.

Related jobs like skilled machinists are in demand as well. Involves both cumputer and mechanincal skills.

What part of computer are you in?

Also what do you mean security. like in a college website on all their academics they offer waht would i want to take. like for what major?

What field makes 60-100?

A family friend I know was part of a team that was in charge of setting up Bank of America's new online banking format. He's making close to 100,000. A friend of mine graduated as an electrical engineer, and works at raytheon making 65ish i think, straight out of URI. And my cousin works for EMC as a tech support guy for business networks. He makes between 70 and 80, but with a lot of travel.

IMO, with just computers, I dont think the future is in straight computer programming. I think its more towards portable devices, networking, and security.

Also integrating technology in other things, like cars for example.

At my school, there is a 2 year course for teaching machining. Our school specializes in the CNC aspect of it, whereas some other local school specialize more into the tool and die making aspect. This is what I'm going to school for, and I love it. It's just fun as hell learning to make stuff from raw metal, then do it. Then also consider it is a skill that I could use for fabrication work on a vehicle if I needed it. I turned a shift knob a month ago, and when I get to the milling aspect, then to the CAD/CAM stuff, I can really get into making crap.

EDIT: Forgot to add, starting out, money wise is fair, but not great. It'll be enough to live on with some left over if your smart with money on your own though. However, as with all trades, experience is the key to the higher paying jobs. One of my shop classmates has been working at Timken for 6 years, and makes 20 bucks an hour, thats the only real machining experience that I know he has. And my shop teacher was offered somewhere in the 6 figures to leave and go back into a shop. However, he's probably forgotten more than most will probably know. Theres money in the field, if your good and you have the experience to back it up.

My cousin that works for EMC graduated in IT- Information Technology.

My friend that works at Raytheon graduated with a degree of Electrical Engineering.

Electrical Engineering is my recommendation. It is broad enough that you can do a lot with the major when you graduate. You could be in research and development, production, design, etc. My friends is actually gonna be starting his MBA soon, so he can move onto business later if he chooses.

EDIT: BTW, electrical engineering is A LOT of math and science, as is anything else to do with computers...

Oh ya,

Also, there's SO many majors that have to do with computers. All the engineering majors, computer science, information systems, information technology, systems analysis. The best bet would be to do a little research on available computer and engineering majors and find out what they do.

If you go towards machining, concentrate on programming. My dad works at one of the largest machine shops in so cal and the setup guys/machinists don't get much. Programmers are in high demand and make good money. They hired a guy from AFR and the guy couldn't handle aerospace parts so he quit. Learn Mastercam, CADkey, and the other software and you could be at 70K+.

I am in the exact same boat as you. I like to work on computers and have really started getting into working on my cars. I even had a job for a year working as a computer tech. I like the job until my boss started having me pick up parts from our distributor in my car. (not down to put uneccessary miles on my car) So I quite. I also took a course laster year in my highschool called AP computer science(programming) and I hated it.

Anyway computer information systems is what I am probably going to go to school for. It basically involves very little programming and a lot about hardware and things of that nature so I am told.
