Where do I position the guideplates on my AFR165's? They've got enough room to move around a little on the studs before the studs are tightened down. Do I center them side-to-side as much as possible? Do I push them towards the springs or pull them away from the springs? Is this a critical alignment??

Just center them as best as possible as it is normal for the roller rocker/pushrod assembly will drift slightly from side to side (unless you're running a shaft-mount system). So, you're going to want some room on either side. Once you've got the roller rocker, pushrod, and valve tip centered, (just finger tightened), then you can center the guideplate. Holding the guideplate in place with one hand, remove the roller rocker and pushrod. Then sinch the stud/guideplate down to the appropriate torque specs.
