After market Shaker ram air for a 69 302. all show? or some go

i used to have a 70 mach C that had a shaker, and really liked the look. I have been eyeballing the after market shaker assemblys that sell for around 500 clams, and just wanted to see if anyone had tried one of these or knew anyhting about them, and what they thought about it.

would i get any increase in HP with one of these on my 302 4v and how much would it be 5-15hp? or would this simply be a cosmetic mod.

It is simply a cosmetic mod. I love the shakers and wanted to do the exact same thing but can't. If you ever decide to up teh performance on that engine you won't be able to fit that shaker under your hood with an aftermarket manifold. If I wasn't building the engine I would have done it, they are awesome. As far as gains go you might see like 5 HP once you are going like 105MPH it really won't do anything for you except look good.

Its more of a cold air intake than a ram air. The scoop is far too small and is in the wrong place to get any ram air effect. I have been eyeballing one too for future mods but I just don't trust the fiberglass construction ones. I will have to figure out something to do with the aftermarket intake too if that is the case. Would the 428 shaker allow more room for an aftermarket intake in your situation or are they all the same pretty much?

i don't know why anyone hasn't considered modifying the air cleaner especially on the aftermarket units, just cut the center of the air cleaner out and add some material to make the base sit lower over the carb and you can basically set it to wahtever height you need. i can see not modifying an original shaker base since they cost so damn much now, but i see no reason why you can't modify a repro unit.


edit: here is a pic i found that a guy modified the air cleaner base for his 429cj 71 mach so that he was able to use a taller intake

Although modifying the air cleaner like that will work I can't imagine that you're getting any benefit from the shaker. The air filter element looks like it would be mostly blocked by the extended air horn?

I used a Fordramair shaker on my sons 70 resto-mod. I just bought the shaker scoop and adapted it to a 4.6 DOHC engine. The only thing that I found different is the front mounting hole is not counter sunk like an original would be. His just lets cold air into the throttle body. Get on of those k&n extreme things which has a filter element on the top too.

I've thought about that.... I imagine (although I haven't tried it) that the top isn't strong enough to hold the base on the engine. The air lid is the primary thing that holds the shaker, base, etc to the engine.

I used a K&N "X-stream" filter top on the ram-air air cleaner on my 73 Mustang. It is plenty strong enough to hold the air cleaner in place.
