AHHH!!! i was gonna run her off the bridge today

hey guys
last night im driving back home and all of a sudden i hear some crazy grinding noise comin from i think the right side by the shifter

i took off the shifter boot but i cant pin-point to what it is

it only happens when im in gear and usually, if not only, when i hit a bump
and also it doesnt always happen it'll happen for ten minutes straight then stop for an hour and over again

it sounds like rotating metal piece is rubbing on another metal piece

if i had to make the closest example i'd say it sounds as if the driveshaft was rubbin on the exhaust but its not
i lifted it and cant find anything
IT BUGS ME OUT cause i feel like its affected by the bumps on the road but it ONLY happens when im in gear and on the throttle

Or DS rubbing on a muffler. My pass. Muff has done that before. You should see score marks on the DS if this is the case (they can be tough to see). Remember that the exhaust geometry is all different when you jack up the frame vs how it is in its true dynamic. Things can look cool while you're under the car but then things get close together once lowered down.

Are you sure the tire isnt rubbing anything?

the tires are good - i had that issue before but i put on spacers and its all clear now

i checked the d/s it seems like there are no marks on it what so ever (i just got it about a week or so ago so it be easy for me to notice it since its still shiny and spanking new)

i removed the shifter boot as i said earlier and i noticed the two little smog related pipes on the passenger side

the one that goes to the exhaust seems to be really close to both the body and the exhaust so im thinkin thats vibrating and causing the sound (im gonna remove it since i dunt have the smog) and see what happens, although it doesnt quite sound that would make the noise i get

PLEASE give me a little more detail on the positioning of the d/s and the exhaust of the car on the lift VS on the ground or if i was to hit a bump

could that really be it??
*** i assume there is nothin tranny or clutch related that would ever be in correlation to bumps on the road (tranny mounts are recently replaced and are good - also checked those out earlier today)

Actually, if you had it on a drive-on lift, forget what I said. My comment was based on jacking up one side of the car (with a floor jack). The drivetrain and exhaust system dont stay in the same relative positions necessarily when you do this. I.e. when I jack mine up (at a corner frame-rail), the mufflers and DS are far apart (the DS drops but the mufflers dont, IIRC). But with the car on the ground, when I get underneath, the muffler and DS nearly touch.

I had only mentioned that because of my own experience. I thought I had more room than I did - I dont have a lift though.

I still think that there can be an issue with the mufflers vs the driveshaft when hitting a bump. The DS has room to move and the mufflers really dont. Same deal with the E-brake bracket Derek mentioned - it can rub when your car is lowered and/or you have folks in the back seat.

Something I've done to narrow this stuff down. If you dont mind putting a little paint (basically a guide-coat) on your undercarraige: I hit places I think are rubbing with flat black (it adheres well and dries quickly). Then I drive it till I hear whatever I'm listening for. Then come home and look at all my painted spots and note which one now has paint chafed off. That's what was rubbing.

I agree that it sounds like it's either the exhaust or e-brake bracket rubbing. Once the pinion angle changes when the suspension is compressed, funny things can happen. It's often exacerbated by lowered suspension.

And holy huge sig pic! Man, you gotta resize that thing. 650 x 150 is the max per the SN TOS.

This sounds strange, but after I installed my new shifter, the metal/rubber cover was rubbing one of the new shifter bolt heads... It made a funny rubbing metal sound and changed with every bump I hit, obviously because the tranny doesnt sit perfectly still going down the road. I just took that shifter boot/cover off and looked underneath and saw the rub marks and bent it up a little to clear the shifter bolt head... Fixed my rubbing noise I had... It might be worth a look?

well, i do have to admit that the sound is worse with people in the back seat
it never hapens when im alone, and the more people i have sitting in the rear, the louder and more frequent the sound gets (noticed it today after i dropped off 2 off my friends off)
