I just got my car repainted (1998 Saleen Cobra) and I have the Saleen cobra (air extractor) hood. When they repainted it they didn't replace/repaint the black area of the rear facing scoops. Does anyone know if that area is just painted or is it a decal? It had a texture to it as I recall. I wish I had paid more attention to it now.

I may be mistaken (& I'm sure Robert or Marcus will correct me), I believe the vents with the small round holes are actually inserts into the hood.

If I am mistaken, then the exterior portion of the vents should be painted black. I don't believe it was a decal because trying to line up all those little holes would have been far too labor intensive.

I'll have to review my own Saleen Cobra's hood to confirm my observations.

Thanks for the input. I will go look again, but I think mine are made in the hood. The little side vents are separate, but the ones in the base of the scoop are part of the hood. I think mine looked like a crinkle finish, but maybe the paint was just cracked or something. check it out and let me know and I'll get mine put back like it should be.

I see them called a "heat extractor" hood a lot, don't know what the official name is. My car is a '98 but they come on the 99 - 04 as well. According to my window sticker it was an option, but all of the cobra's may have them. It's this hood:

Yea, that's the hood that I have on my car too! As far as painting the little holes in there, mine where painted black, it's functional too. but the sides i believe where plastsic, these weren't painted I believe, I think that that's the 351 hood too I think it's the same hood.?

so is it just plain flat black or crinkle finish looking? Sorry, not trying to be picky, but if I have to paint it anyway I want to paint it right the first time.

OK.

The hood is called the "heat extractor" hood. They came fiberglass/composite, or full carbon fiber. Not all S351's recieved this hood. It is not called the S351 hood.

The "heat extractors" ( the vents in the center of the hood ) are supposed to have the same plastic ( black ) vent piece ( with the circle holes ) that the "nostrils" have from Ford at the top of the hood. The plastic inserts ( the nostrils ) are painted the same color as the car. The vent/screens inside the nostrils are black plastic. kaenen may sell the heat extractor inserts for the hood that match the nostril vents. Or call MPS as they sell knock off's that fit better than the originals.

:D

Hope that helps.

Well, MPS doesn't have them and I emailed kaenen and did not get a response. I called Saleen and they have them so I just ordered from them. $22.00 for two little plastic pieces. :( When you guys need Saleen parts do you just go to them or is there some other place that has better service or anything? I know Haney Motorsports has a lot of Saleen stuff, but I've never used them.

I just returned from a short drive (biz related, of course) & took the opportunity to inspect the vents in my '98 Saleen Cobra's hood.

The vents do not have inserts nor are they painted. The section with the small holes is just the unfinished carbon fiber that is used in the center section laminate of the hood. This section is also unfinished on the underside of the hood.

Bummer. Take your car back. I'm only joking.

No you are ok. Those are them. Just clean that overspray off them for crying out loud. Or is that red wax that Stevie Wonder waxed your car with? :)

LOL. Hopefully I can cancel the order from saleen in the morning. I was having a hard time understanding I guess. I thought there was a black plastic insert that went on top of that piece.

I picked it up late last night...after dark...from the body shop and that's from where they buffed out the new paint and didn't clean it up. It was freezing cold out today so I wasn't able to do any cleaning on it.

Thanks so much for your help!!!!!

Oh, and BTW...I see you have a decal under your hood. What decal should be there? I need to replace mine I guess...there's no decal under my hood.

Now that's interesting, Marcus. Apparently the hood on your dearly departed R-code S351 is all carbon fiber & unfinished underneath. My hood must be a combo of carbon fiber & fiberglass as my center section is unfinished CF & the outer sections are completely finished & painted to match the body color; I assume they are FG.

digdoug: your scoops look exactly like mine so obviously Saleen made running changes to their hoods over the years, such as materials, construction & probably suppliers.

Yes Sir.

The "full" carbon fiber hood was a rare option. Most Saleen hoods that come on the cars are a composite sandwich. Most guys think they have a carbon fiber hood but they do not. :)
