Well, I took the silencer off my air filter. While I was doing this I noticed this vaccum control thingy in there. It controls a flap inside the housing that switches from outside cold air to a hose that i guess pulls in heated air from the exhaust manifold. Is this important to keep connected or could I get rid of it? I also live in a county that has strict emissions laws, so would any mods make me not pass inspection?

You do not need that at all. It's just helps to warm up the car on cold days, barely. Take that crap off and plug the vacuum hose so you don't have a leak. That will not effect emissions.

It helped me on the high end, to me it feels like my car has a hair more power at higher speeds. You probly gain .5-2hp from the whole CAI set up but not really enough to notice.

I never just took the silencer off, I took it all off at the same time. Once I did this, I noticed a real cool throatyer sound when I gave it some gas than with the stock set up.

P.s keep all that stuff because you may pass a sniffer test, but maybe not a visual test. In my town you have to have that heater tube to the air box- mainifold. Once you get the sticker yank it off and go again

I didn't notice a huge difference, but there is a small increase in power. I also bumped up the timing a bit and that helped a lot also. I really can't tell a difference in sound at the moment because I have a hole in my muffler so that is all I can hear.

I gained some high end power also. You can here my intake from about 1/8 mile away and it raspy not ricey.. It took about 2-3 to fabricate one and I felt it was well worth it

Every little helps and I love the way it made my motor run and sound on the high end.

What are you wanting to do and how much Hp are you looking to make ?

On a N/A 2.3L, 150hp - 175hp with some work, planing and Money. 175-200 N/A well take lots Money and really want sound like a 2.3L Which a CAI will add 1-5HP of that total hp est.

Now on a turbo 2.3L, 175-200hp is pretty much droping in a stock 2.3T set up from a TC you can probly buy for 300-700.00 for the whole car. A CAI will add 7-9hp on top of that hp est.

Either way a CAI helps out
