Air Thermactor Crossover

How hard is it to get the crossover tube off the heads? Is this a broken bolt risk or just good penetrating oil and they come off easy

Never hurts to use some pb blaster.. good luck cleaning that carbon build up out of there! and those bolts are only a pain to remove due to the position of them.

I had to clean mine as well. Getting it off is a real PITA and getting it back on is worse. What made it easier to get back on was ditching the bolts for studs and nuts.

So I know that this tube provides additional air from the smog pump to the heads but with it being clogged what are the ill affects of that over time? I thought I had read it could harm the cats but currently at work and can't really go back through the research I had done.

A clogged tube would mean no air being supplied to the exhaust ports during warmup. These go to the first two cats to help with emmissions during warmpup.

After the car is warmed up, the diverter directs air flow to the two main cats, so the tube wouldn't be used at that point.

I don't see it causing an big issue long term. Might be easier to see if there is a tube on ebay, and clean that up

That's what I was thinking. Knowing what my egr looked like I am going to predict this tube is more like a tube of carbon concrete. Also wonder if it might be best to make a new tube out of flexible hosing that is used in other smog transport areas to prevent difficult cleaning in the future.

To be honest, it's not really a part that usually needs maintaining. I've never done it on my car, and at the rate I drive it, may never need to.

If you have oil issues inside the cylinder? Then yes, the tube may clog up as the oil partially burns and sludges it up. Not uncommon to see

There's a few tubes on eBay. One looks practically brand new. Just buy one and swap it out

If it's hard to find those, and you see one thats even marinally good, buy it. If you need to clean one out I would think if you take some of the stuff we used to use to soak carb bodies. Used to get it in 5 gal cans. It may take a few days but I think if you drip some in the tubes and let it soak you should be able to clean most of the carbon out of it,

Ford doesn't make them anymore, but the aftermarket does. I bought a brand new one at Part Source (Canadian version of Pep Boys, I guess) about 2-years ago.
