Well, just took my son to summer camp and put 440 miles on the Mustang today. It was a beautiful day with perfect weather and a sunburned left arm/leg to prove it. Anyway, most of the trip the cruise was set at 73 mph and believe it or not, the best mileage I got was 26.7 mpg on the way to camp and 26.5 mpg on the way home. On another positive note, a quite a few drivers gave me the as they passed by!

NICE! Glad you enjoy the Stang and the drive!
I'm getting ready to head out on a 522 mile journey in mine tomorrow morning. It will be the longest one way trip to date with her, which is hard to believe being she already has 74K on her now Sunglasses on, windows down and stereo up

Agreed, I love my GT. The best I have ever gotten was 29.7 on a 280 mile trip to Vegas! 300 horses and 30 mpg! Can it get better? I submit that it cannot...

Oh yes, another thing to note is that with my exhaust set-up (O/R H-Pipe, Flowmaster AT axle backs and the resonators) one might expect some drone. I can tell you that there is no drone whatsoever at this cruising speed. It was so quiet I would have to stomp on it periodically to make sure it was still running.

I'm right there with you, COBESGT. My '08 GT coupe is the best combination of performance, comfort, and value I have ever owned. Way better comfort, brakes, fuel economy, and handling than my '69 SS396 Chevelle, '68 390 AMX and '67 Firebird 400. The only thing I miss is the low end grunt of big cubes and 10+ CR. And people love these S197s. I get more smiles, waves, thumbs up, etc., than any other car. Just yesterday, a very attractive 20-something young woman waved me to a stop in a parking lot to tell me she loved the car. She was probably a little disappointed when the dark tinted driver's window went down and she was face to face with a 56 year old. When I was in high school, there was an old man (fifties!) in town who drove a pristine Hemi GTX. We young bucks could not understand why an old man wanted a car like that. Now I know. LOL!

Yup, the Mustang is a spectacular car. I have had Vetts, Porsche, Audi, Ferrari, BMW etc etc but I have owned 15+ Mustangs and its the only car that when I see a clean GT or Cobra I always compliment the car to its owner. I love the looks and the sound and the history behind its name. I have yet to own a S197 chasis but will own one before next year is out but they catch my eye the most and it seems I have not seen two identical GTs yet. Every one has its own little special part the owner put on and I really like that.

That shows the love of the car. How many millions of cars are made that people dont care enough about to do anything other then tint it yet every Mustang owner buys their car "presents"


Seriously, how many of you have ever had a gift under the x-mas tree tagged for "The Mustang"?


One thing I have noticed about the S197 crowd is they are a bit more friendly. When I drove my Cobra and saw another nice Stang I would smile and wave and get the same response. When I drive my Lincoln the Fox guys usually say thanks or wave but the SN guys more often just ignore me but the S197 guys ALWAYS wave back and if we are at a stop will talk your ear off! Thats another thingI like about these cars.

How did you know about the Christmas tree?! Agreed the Mustang is truly an American icon. I'm glad that my first brand new car is one and will stay one! I always flash my fogs at any that pass by or wave if they are close enough...

I hear ya! My last trip to Carlisle PA. (3hr drive) I average 26mpg at 70mph with the air conditioning on. How can you not love this car!!!!!

Here's how I came to buy the 2008 Mustang GT convertible.

I have a wife and a 5 year old.
I like a decent sized RWD vert with some decent power and a small back seat.

Ok, so what were my choices?
Mustang GT
Mercedes CLK500
BMW 335i

That's pretty much it. Everything else is either FWD, or a two seater. The 335i has no trunk space with the roof down, and the CLK starts at $57,000.

So the Mustang was not only my first choice for style and performance, it was my only choice for, yes, I'll say it, practicality. I also regularly get 24mpg, unless of course I have my dirt bike on the rack behind it, when I "only" get 20mpg. Oh, did I forget to mention the solid axle and the substantial frame material under the trunk which allowed for a welded in 2 inch hitch?



Truly the perfect vehicle for me...

How ever do folks get 26 or 29 mpg? I've driven a flat course like an old lady and only got 22. I only have 15K miles on the car. Should I expect it to improve?

Oh, and ya gotta love the Mustang!

Mine was about 15k miles in, with a swap to Synthetic oil at 3,000 miles. A/C on, about 72-75 mph, on the flat part of I-5 between Grapevine and Sacramento, cruise control on, 80 degrees, measured both by miles/gallons and by the onboard computer (which I've found to be amazingly accurate) at 24.3 mpg average for both directions.

Maybe it's the synthetic oil?

Wow , I have a 2009 GT coupe with the roush supercharger and only get about 13.6 MPH and that is with the AC off too . I usually take it to work on nice days and it is all rural driving no highway for the most part .

Well 29 was my best so don't get your shorts in a bunch there... I average 26 like most everyone else, but it is funny when I told my buddy who has a v6 my mpg and he got frustrated a bit and said he has never seen 25 I told him he is a leadfoot

ok, so i'll iron my shorts. I don't think there is a big mileage difference between the v6 and GT. I rented a v6 in LA and the mileage was not what I expected. So I'm thinking the decision between the 2 cars is aesthetics, cost, and insurance.

There's probably differences between automatic and manual, vert and coupe, top down and top up.
I have an auto and with the top up I got those numbers.

With the top down, there's a lot of buffeting and turbulence goin on in the back seat. My nephew really had to hunker down with his hood on. I was back there myself when my older nephew drove. Mini hurricane back there. Not good for gas mileage.

I noted that on some foreign cars they have some kind of shield that I think reduces the turbulence. I'm surprised something like that is not available in the aftermarket for Mustangs.

What I'm surprised about is that Ford still doesn't offer any kind of pop-up rollover protection for the vert.

Hence the rollbar (not lightbar, which is useless) in my pics...

But, I guess the Camaro and Corvette vert won't have any protection either, so maybe it's just an American car thing...
