I replaced my battery in Feb 2015, the alternator last month Oct 2015, because headlights seemed to get less bright while driving at night. I have almost 168K miles on original alternator. Worked fine for a couple weeks and then things started getting weird. Battery indicator needle spikes to high, CHECK CHARGING SYSTEM warning comes on, ABS light and traction control light flash. I think maybe I got a bad alternator from AutoZone. Belt is good (replaced less than 2 years ago), all pulleys good, all connections good, no corrosion, secure, so I am guessing I got a faulty alternator. I saw in threads elsewhere with things like 'Ford did not engineer the grounds right...you need to add additional grounds to the system'...but no definitive answer to flickering headlights and CHECK CHARGING SYSTEM warning problems.

There is a known issue with 2005-2006 Mustang's alternator. The best way to check it is with an oscilloscope to verify it is the alternator. Refurbished alternators from auto parts stores tend to be hit and miss.

I agree, when I hit 90,000 miles on my 1994 Thunderbird 140 amp original alternator failed. Within 5 days I went through 3 pep boys rebuilts, most were intermittent. They did not have a new one in stock so I went to NAPA and got one of their rebuilts and never had a problem.

I know this is an old thread, but my charging system just went. It flickered a lot last year, but when I go it out for the second autocross, it just started to GO. I ordered a new alternator from american muscle. May of the reviews say that is the fix for check charging system light.
