My Ampres Idiot light in my dash has been lighting up a lots lately . So I checked DC reading of battery with car running, it's at 15Volts. Someone told me this is a bad voltage regulator in my alternator . Is this correct or could it be a wiring problem ? Anyways I ordered one of those black HO alternators from Jeg's. Hope it will fix my problem with voltage, btw will this 15 volts possibly fry any of my car's electronics or sensors ?
TIA

i would think it was a bad voltage regulator or battery if the battery light is illuminating voltage reading should be 14.1-14.7 but you can find out free just take it to the local autoparts store and have them check your charging system... charging system problems can do alot of damage i would get it tested to know exactally what was causing battery light to illuminate...

Ok, will take battery out of car,to have it tested tomorrow. This would eliminate one possibility it sounds like.

can you drive the car if so drive it to the auto parts store and they can test the whole charging system and tell you if its the battery, alt. or voltage regulator

Worryed about driving the car with the voltages high, plus at the moment would have to drive a lots of extra miles going to town. Main highway is closed because, the Coal mine is installing railroad tracks across the highway out here. Off to get the battery tested now.

Problem solved by new alternator! Funny thing Autozone checked my old one several times and it always passed.
Must just not be making enough current for all my systems, no more Ampres Idiot light ever now ! Oh and the car accelerates much harder now also

My Stang is a 1987. Oh also the voltage readings I mentioned earlier were wrong , the meter a inexpensive DVM was reading higher than the volts actually were .
