another exhaust ?

i needed to put a go to h*ll exhaust on my 87 lx so i can get it to the muffler shop to have the new exhaust put on. the only muffler decent enough to use was one i had off a nissan stanza (small) would this muffler make the car lag powerwise?. also when i start my car and warm up the fuel gauge reads exactly how much fuel i have but the minute i take off it jumps all the way to the top past full, even when i only have half a tank. thanks for any input

screw it.... if your putting on a new exhaust anyways just drive it there. I drove my 351w car to the exhaust shop with open 1 3/4" hooker long tubes.... Anyway the thing sounded like a top fuel and nobody said boo. So I think you will be safe with the 4 pot.
As for the tank sender.... get a new one.

Now unless your muffler shop is in the next town or state I would just drive it open exhaust down to the shop. If you get stoped just explain what your doing and you should be ok.

yea i knew that,but the shop is 35 mi. away. what i meant was would the small muffler from the nissan decrease hp,cuz before the re-build it had open exhaust & no muffler and ran like a scalded dog,then after the re-build i put an old ranger exhaust with the nissan muffler and it has no @ss. have put 1000 mi on it and changed the oil again. im hoping that its just the non oe muffler causing the granny speed im getting. it makes sense to me but wanted some other thoughts. thanks for the replys

Ya I figured your muffler shop was aways off. Most people jump at the chance to drive open exhaust down the street come time for new exhaust

Well I'm no expert but I would say that running open exhaust would have more balls to the wall than a full exhaust any day. On the other hand I would think that by straping on a muffler you wouldn't loose a great deal unless that nissan is real restictive or junk to begin with. I would go down and but a muffler from AutoZone etc and take it and have it weilded on. Its cheaper to buy from someone other than the muffler shop anyways.

alright,let me see if i can explain without confusion. the 2300 that was in the car before i ran the jury rigged exhaust was only running on 3 cyl. and would drive pretty good. rebuilt a ranger motor 2 weeks ago and ran the exhaust from the same ranger and it lagged in 2nd and 3rd. but had new exhaust put on yesterday for $100.00 (i supplied the muffler) and it runs pretty fast for a 4 cyl. still have to break the motor in so i wont know about its full potential yet. thats why i was worried about h.p. i took my time with the rebuild and was getting a complex about the motor worried if i did everything right.

Get a muffler for your setup, if you go to small you lose some horsepower due to excess back pressure, generally speaking on a 2.3 n/a between 2.25 and 2.5 is the sweet spot, nothing bigger nothing smaller. With no exhaust on your motor, it should run pretty crapy...n/a needs exhuast pulses to help pull the exhuast out of the chamber and without the right size piping you lose the scavaging affects of the *right amount* of backpressure. Atleast this is my limited understanding of it.

This is what I've heard also, and a bigger exhaust would cause it to scavage exhaust has will as suck in more fuel than needed into the chambers for burning. Thus giving you bad gas mileage.
